    I don't understand..

Ok so I have a job and I've been saving up for a new computer.. I decided to get a laptop as I found a store that sells one with great specs brand new.. Thing is my dad won't let me..I bought a laptop before but he's saying no. I asked why, and his reasoning was that I'm on the computer too much.. Well I'm on it for 3hrs/day MAX because of work/hanging out.. so I'm not asking so much as how to persuade but I need help comprehending why.. I asked why and he ignores me now..

Haven't asked mom yet, but if she says yes I might buy one off amazon or newegg.

Your old one keeps freezing/overheating and you have trouble doing homework on it.

The new laptop uses less energy; save on power bill.

Your old laptop radiates too much heat during the summer.

You are inclined to spend it on drugs if you can't spend it on a laptop.

Your friends make fun of you because you use a crappy computer.

Simple answer for this, your money, your choice.

Nobody can directly determine what you do with your money.

Its your hard earned money, you can spend it on what you want. Are you in College or something if so, tell them it will help you with your work or something.

    I don't understand..

When are you 18? And try saying some of the things KMJT said.

Sit in front of on your mum and dad with the laptop and huff and puff and say your laptop is going really slow etc.

Personally (I would have been a little shit at your age) I would have said to my dad "I got a D in -what ever subjects you take-" and when he asks why just say "Oh well you said I go on the laptop too much, so I didn't have time to finish my work otherwise I would have been on too long" (something like that) but just play it cool with that and he'll be like :O!!!!!!
Like I said though, I would have been a douche and done that haha, luckily now I can buy my own things :p

Your parent's have far too much control over you at 17 by the sounds of it. If you are old enough to be working and making your own money, you should be able to spend it on whatever you want - providing it is within reason of course. Part of life is learning how to save, manage, and spend money, and also learning what it feels like to work your butt off and save up for something, and the pride that comes from earning something that you really worked for.

A laptop is a fairly big purchase for a kid at 17 living with his parents, and it really teaches you some good life lessons. You should sit down with your Dad and really hear him out and let him voice his concerns, in return for him listening to your side of things as well. Maybe you guys can even come to a compromise? Your parents agree to let you purchase the laptop, but only if you finish the school year with solid grades. Or upon purchasing the laptop, you agree to only use it for a set amount of time per day so that you are not holed up in your room 24/7 on the computer.

Another big life lesson is learning how to hear your parents out respectfully, but also challenge them in a way that is not defiant or rebellious. Set some ground rules or come up with a compromise, and sit down with them and lay out the plan and how you have been saving and budgeting to buy this item that you really want. Hopefully they will be able to understand where you are coming from, respect the fact you are trying to be a responsible adult by forming a plan and discussing it with them, and then perhaps then they will give you a chance. Good luck :)
