I was just curious as to the logic behind this. Large active threads are closed because they're bad on the server.

Take a look in the spam forum, or the archives section.

Spam forum has 1181 pages of spam threads.

Archives has 1233 pages of spam threads.

Would it not be easier and make more sense to just prune those? Get rid of them off the server...

I don't mean all of them, but a large majority of those pages should be pruned, they're obviously not helping the server, and no one really uses them.

As far as I'm aware, large threads only take memory to open when accessed. Otherwise it's just simple data.
And no way the archive is going.

Well why not do both? It won't hurt... The site is still lagging for me.

Actually, it was better this past week, just shitty today for some reason.

Why not do both of what?
I highly doubt deleting SF and archive threads will help at all.

The issue is opening the large threads and searching them.

Do you know how much space 521k posts (the total posts from both categories I mentioned) takes up? It's ridiculous. Like I said, it won't hurt the server in any way. It may not make it that much faster, but it's a start.

By both, I mean why not leave large threads closed and prune old spam forum threads and archives.

i do not support the archives, those are still used for past and present things, I.E. finding old emails posted etc. or finding a old scammer thats trying to trade you now.

i know i personally use them often.

do with spam forum as you wish, it's exactly that, "spam" it means nothing only hold it has is "personal" and "emotional" ties to peoples history on sythe, and those who have survived it.

but archives do have a purpose.

The database was actually pruned from 05-07, so a lot of threads have already been removed (but still accessible if necessary)

Suggesting they remove the Archives is a very naive suggestion. I mean really, Archives are the backbone of Sythe. All the people that are banned, all the people that are attempting to rejoin the community (High pardons ect), how would anything be feasible without archives? It wouldn't. That's like a world without history.

I can bet 80% of evaders are found through Archives, I myself have found a few from there, and prevented myself from trading with evaders on numerous occasions.

But like I said, it can't hurt. It will only help. Why do we need 1,000+ pages of spam threads?

The issue is large threads not the number of threads. I don't know why as I do not know how the database is set up but posting things to large threads is very slow. The forum was already pruned and there was barely a difference. We aren't going to prune the entire database just to see if it is slightly better.

Do you even know how much space 521k posts take up? Let's be EXTREMELY generous and say 1kb per post, that's ~521 mbs. That's almost nothing. Now add in that a single post is nowhere near 1 kb and the space required is next to none.

Old threads often generate traffic through google searches and I'm sure they've come in handy in staff investigations before, there is no real reason to remove them.
