Should people have a license to drink alcohol?

Just thought about this idea right now. I understand it sounds pretty stupid at the forefront, but consider this. Thousands (if not more) of people suffer each year due to drunk driving, alcoholic poisoning, unwanted pregnancies, etc. Similar to how driving licenses are given out, people would have to complete some sort of written test that asks them a number of different safety questions regarding the use of drinking.

Whats the point, it won't prevent anything as when you are sober it won't be a difficult test and second everyone already knows the negative consequences of drinking but does so anyways.

    ^

also there is a license, your drivers license to get the booze, Just because someone passes a driving test doesn't mean they drive safe?

Just because a system is in place doesn't mean it will keep people safe, it all boils down to the person using, it's their role to make good decisions, that is why they age limit is in place, they hope that people ate that age have matured enough to make decisions for themselves and not have to have their hand held 24/7.

you're a fucking adult if you can't handle your booze and want to drink and drive to kill people, thats on you, but don't cause problems for the rest of us who drink resposibly <-- spelling?

Can we really make that assumption though? When a kid reaches 'x' age, he's allowed to legally drink as much as he wants. Can we fully assume that the kid already knows the negative consequences of drinking?

A system like this definitely won't stop it, but it might affect it. It might prevent some of the problems that arise from drinking. People who acknowledge the negative consequences are less likely to go through with it than people who have no idea. That sound reasonable?

all this will do is make ppl get one person to buy their booze for them, like they did in high school

seriously, problem drinkers are going to find a way to get booze even if you make it illegal

No this does nothing at all, my university ran a study (moderately sized around 5k people during the summer courses) and 95% of them had drank underage and 70% frequently drank underage (more than once a month). By the time its legal for you to drink you already understand the negative consequences quite well.

Maybe if there where a license you could scan to see how much booze you have bought recently and enforce a limit on it. That would be more practical.

They do this in rural Australian towns where 'locals' are only allowed to buy certain amounts of alcohol on certain days simply because they have been abusing it.

It's a matter of personal responsibility; a restriction like this would place an undue burden upon the public for the actions of a few.

It's completely outside the scope of legitimate governmental action.

drunk driving: You need a license for this yet people still drink drive...

alcoholic poisoning: If your stupid enough to drink X amount of alcohol to cause you to get alcohol poisoning then you deserve it.

unwanted pregnancies: People have unwanted pregnancies all the time with out consuming alcohol.

The license to drink is your age, 21 or 18 depending on where you live.

If a license to drink alcohol beverages were amended, then a cost would be put onto it, and considering how much alcohol actually already cost, it wouldn't even be worth it.

There's already a required license to sell alcohol, there wouldn't be much different in a license to drink alcohol.

Plus as previously mentioned, it's all aged based anyway.

Definitely not. We are controlled enough, we don't need a more communist-like government. Besides, the government wouldn't do that. They make far too much off alcohol. I have no care for the careless people you speak off and their abuse of alcohol, neither does the government. They "suffer" at their own will. Why act like it's all tragic and alcohol is to blame? That's naive. It's a poison, we all know that. People are speaking as if alcohol is the problem, it's not - it's the stupid people. They deserve to suffer and die.

Whether anyone thinks this will ever be the case or not, it will not ever happen, rightfully.
They'll just keep upping the tax on it, as they do, it will never be regulated beyond age, it would cost too much and the population issue would get worse. If you doubt the government makes billions off alcohol, then do some research.

Should people have a license to drink alcohol?

Brake’s License Proposal was the first time they tried to put a license on drinking a beverage.

It all falls within the person. Everyone has their rights as humans. They know what's right and what's wrong. Drink and drive, get put in jail. Easy as that. Almost like saying, you will need a license to carry a cell phone as texting and driving kills millions. No, going over the limit gets you in jail, as well as texting and driving..which i'm thinking that texting is just a big fine.

Just keep it as the drunks get NO license and drive them DUI mobiles(mopeds)

The irony is that in Canada you can actually get a DUI on those Electric Scooter mopeds.

Should people have a license to drink alcohol?

Duno if this would be stupid or not, but ill give my input.

What if the government released a new law to ban repeat offenders of drunk-related crimes, from drinking. it would be like a drivers license in a way, if you get so many points you get banned from drinking for however long.

Say you were arrested for driving, vandalising or disturbing the public under the influence of alcohol (drunk), you get points on your criminal record or whatever under a section regarding alcohol.

And whilst your banned from drinking, it would hopefully help to encourage them not to drink, as they know if they get caught doing anything bad drunk again by the police, they'll be able to see their banned on the system, so action can be taken appropriately for the offence, possible jail time/community service for example.

This most likely wouldn't stop them drinking completely, like at home or a restaurant, because how would they get found out? but thats not the problem anyway, the idea is to discourage these people from re-offending. as they know this time they'll get more than a slap on the wrist. So it'll make them think twice about going out clubbing or to a pub and getting absolutely smashed, which I'm assuming is the main objective here, stopping public over-drunkness that leads to crimes.

Should people have a license to drink alcohol?

Any attempt on controlling alcohol has failed miserably, history has shown time and time again that where alcohol is possibly able to be manufactured (everywhere) people will drink it. A "drinking license" wouldnt do anything at all but possibly get people into trouble needlessly. The people are going to drink, people are going to get hurt accept it.. its a said but true fallacy of human nature. Drink up, i sure am.

BTW: What would the test for this license consist of ?? A few trial drinks were some dickwad judges whether you can handle your shit ?? Theres no effective way to judge these things and the idea of it is just silly

Should people have a license to drink alcohol?

I actually think this is a cool idea. Rather than just a written test, there would also be like a medical test to determine your "Drunk Tolerance Level" (DTL - I could totally coin that). This value would be the basis of how much alcohol you can buy at the bar. Furthermore, people with liver problems and whatnot will automatically "fail" the test.

Anyway, no point of discussing it really, because no one would follow it.

Exactly. It's for people to know (not only the person drinking, but others around that person drinking) when the person drinking will likely get drunk, and help to avoid that (such as a bartender refusing to give the person another drink once he/she reaches his/her "DTL"). Everyone needs different amounts of alcohol to get drunk.
