What do you think about smoking?

Just the things that they put into cigarettes are designed to get you addicted. Fiber glass to cut your lungs to get you addicted faster type of thing. I'd say to give up your habit while you can, as it's bad for health and for the cash in your wallet. If you're looking for a different feeling, just smoke weed. It is illegal, yes, but it's better than physically hurting your lungs for a slight buzz that CAN get you addicted.

I do smoke cigarettes, but I HATE that I do...I quit a while ago or 2 months, than started again. Honestly, I am trying to quit atm..

 

That is the exact root of the problem. Kids start smoking to look cool or fit in and in the end just gain an addiction. Then yeah they smoke because they are addicted and not to "look cool" anymore, but they initially most likely started off to either fit in or rebel. Its not like kids smoke their first cigarette because they are stressed. Maybe their 2nd 3rd or 4th, but not their first.

Smokers who try to justify smoking because of their addiction shouldn't have started in the first place unless they got addicted from parents' second hand smoke etc.

 

Cigarettes gross me out, but it's not my decision if others want to smoke.

Not really. Maybe a lot of kids do have their first cigarette out of peer pressure, but most wouldn't continue doing it for long if they disliked it and especially not enough to lead to an addiction. No one gets addicted on their first cigarette. It takes a good amount of effort, time and money to get hooked and no one would do it for that long if they didn't like it. It's not hard at all to be able to smoke and never get addicted. I'd say a lot of people try it out of curiosity, considering smoking is everywhere and it's impossible to avoid.

No smoker tries to justify it. Everyone knows smoking is terrible for your health, but there's no need to keep stating the obvious. Everyone still has a right to do what they want as long as it doesn't affect anyone else. The best thing of course is to just never try it. I know that I definitely shouldn't smoke, but I also enjoy them and I don't smoke enough to have noticed any negative side effects over the years.

And you can't get addicted from inhaling second hand smoke. You might be introduced to it from watching your parents do it all your life, but it's not possible to actually develop an addiction from it. My dad has smoked all my life and about 10 other family members of mine for several years also, which I'm sure was one of the reasons why I tried it. My dad is the only one left who hasn't quit.

 

You are right I worded it wrong. Instead of second hand smoke I was trying to refer to the correlation between being raised in a house with smokers and starting to smoke; addiction stemming from seeing your parents smoke everyday and being around it, not addiction to the second hand smoke itself.

I don't know I guess it could be different in each country. At my university there are a lot of first year students that come in addicted to smoking. Well not full out addicted, but they crave a cigarette when drinking which I consider addicted. For an addiction to develop before they even leave high school means pear pressure or trying to fit in imo.

 

I think smoking is fine as long as smokers pay attention not to cause any botheration to others. I do smoke myself and I'm aware of it's disadvantages however it is also true that it helped me with managing anger quite a lot of times, and it sure is an advantege in my opinion.

I feel you mate. Quitting smoking is actually one of the hardest things to do for a LOT of people, and is something that a non-smoker could never possibly understand. Some people even swear that quitting smoking is a harder, and more grueling process than kicking heroin.

I really want to quit smoking and every time I run out of a pack, I can usually go cold turkey for a day or two before I am absolutely beside myself about dying for a smoke. Not to mention all the unpleasant physical symptoms that come from quitting smoking. >_<

I don't agree with this. For an addiction to develop, you have to like doing it. I know that a lot of kids do try smoking their first time because of peer pressure, but no one continues for long enough to become addicted just because they're trying to fit in. College and high school aren't much different either when it comes to peer pressure. I'd say just as many people first try drugs, drinking, smoking, etc in college.

Smoking is the kind of addiction that can sneak up on you too. I will admit that in high school, I had the occasional cigarette out of curiosity, or to maybe look a little cool as well :embar: But I very rarely smoked in high school or before.. I could literally count the amount of cigarettes I had smoked during all those years on 2 hands. Truthfully, I could barely choke a cigarette down and I found it to be a disgusting habit - not to mention I am semi allergic to the smoke (it really bugs my throat, eyes, and nasal passages).

Yet here I am years later, a daily smoker. I never thought I would be a smoker and it was one thing I used to pride myself on when I was younger, as the majority of my friends smoke and I was never interested in it. But I guess it got me in the end anyways. :noworry:

 

To the smokers that do smoke, do you just not give a shit about cancer?

I mean, anything that I do that would give me cancer, I would quit on the spot. I tend to like my life. Do you just like the 10minute shitty buzz over a fairly longer life? and not having to cough every so often cause your lungs are just so clogged? Do you plan to smoke for the rest of your life or just short term?

I'm curious.

 

Smoking not only does damage to you but to the people around you. I hate it when people smoke near me. It's fine that they smoke since it's their body and I'm sure they are aware of the risks involved but just don't smoke near others, don't be selfish. Don't ruin the health of others. Nowadays, there are some young kids who smoke cigs. Some being girls. Let me tell you, girls smoking is complete turn off to me. I feel bad for them and I understand that they are addicted and can't help it but its their fault in the first place trying it. I've personally tried cigs before for the curiosity purpose and have never touched it since. I also smoked it near my friends and away from those who don't smoke. Its fine to smoke but don't be selfish and smoke away from others.

 

Voted no due to there being better alternatives and due to the obvious negative health affects from smoking.

 

I hate that i smoke, and other people do aswell. Im going to try and quit smoking. I usually have like 3-5 smokes a day , ik its alot. Should i just go cold turkey? is that the best method to quit?

 

I don't see the point in buying something that is going to kill you. Also, it is disgusting and a complete turn off.

 

Sassy, lower the quantity in which you smoke and slowly quit that way. Don't go cold turkey, it drastically alters what your body is use to so don't do that. If you take 5 a day, try take 4 the first week and then 3 the week after that. The length I am giving between changes might be too short or too long so choose reasonably to how you can do it. I find, you need to have the mental strength to quit smoking. Good luck!

 

Not at all man, ciggaettes cost 10-15 dollars. You don't need to buy anythin to get rid of the smell, maybe you can shower. And a cigg lasts about 2-3 min.
