What is considered discrimination in work places?

I never used the word discrimination or know the meaning on it. I would like to know what are a few examples at which is considered discrimination / discriminating. All I know is that it has to do something with race and ethnicity and is there anything else? I think my work place won't let me work at this "position " because they think I'm slow or mental minded . Is that discriminating even though I don't?

Its like they think I'm not up for the position when I am. I have more experience but yet they let the new hires on that position but not me.

So like I just need a few examples or a very detailed explains room on what is considered disability.

 

it depends...I know someone who is slightly autistic and is always being put down at work and this one person there insults him all the time. Which is completely wrong...

On the other hand, if they don't think you can do the job, than they have the right not to promote/hire you. I wouldn't say that it is discrimination in this case...They probably don't think you are ready for the job..

 

Work place discrimination is very tricky because discrimination can be allowed if it is a must. Take this example that my legal teacher gave the class - say a normal woman goes and tries to get a job as a fire fighter. They refuse to hire her on the grounds that she is a woman, and if they can prove that her being a woman impairs her ability to do the job then they are allowed to refuse her on that basis. The normal woman cannot pick up a 250 lb man single handed because women are generally weaker then men, that is just how we have evolved. So it is tricky, if you are slow and the position requires quick intellect then they can refuse you the position on those grounds if they can prove the requirements.

 

Yeah I understand but here's the thing tho.. A co worker whose literally slow and have his speech slurred ( u can barely understand what he's saying) was put at that position and the position requires decent communication skillz

 

Then it would be the lost of your company isn't it? When the time comes and your boss finds that person is not doing a really good job, you got another chance at it.

 

an example of workplace discrimination would be promoting all the white guys and not the black guy. Or make the black guy do all the work while the white guys do nothing and get paid more. etc.

basically unfair treatment of someone based on things like race, ethnicty, gender, religion, etc.

 

Refusing to put you in a position they don't think you'd do well in isn't discrimination.
