Gas station with Cash or Credit Card?

So my Credit Card offers me 2% cash back for gas which is great since i'll be saving at least 6-8 cents per a gallon. I want to know if its worth using my credit card in all gas stations or not because I have heard that they are charging more for gas if paid by credit than cash.

Say I spent 4.30 on gas and use my 2% cb card and what i'm paying really is 4.22 which is 8 cents.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I have a 5% card for gas and can't see myself ever using cash.

Some stations charge the same price, others charge more for credit cards (Because of the transaction fees that CC companies charge merchants). Just ask before you pump.

From my experience, every single BP station I've seen charges more for credit. The majority of the stations around me charge the same price though.

 

What kind of credit card are you using? The only one that I know that have a 5% gas back all day everyday is Penfed but heard its EXTREMELY hard to get. I know that some gas stations around me put like 3.29 credit / 3.25 cash. but then with my 2% im still getting better deal after 2%.

 

Yeah, I got denied for the PenFed card haha. Right now I'm using a Discover More/BoA 123 card, and next time I apply for cards, a Chase Freedom.

Discover More has 5% in rotating categories every quarter. This quarter isn't gas, but they had groceries just for the month of May, so I bought gas gift cards at a grocery store and used them to pay for gas. The benefit is I get the cash price for that.

The BoA 123 is 1% for everything, 2% for groceries, and 3% for gas. I love that card, since you get a 10% bonus on cash back redeemed if you have a BoA checking account. I have an echecking account with zero balance that I use solely to get the rewards. So I technically get 3.30% cash back on gas, which is awesome.

Which card do you have? The only 2% gas card I can think of is the Amex Blue Cash Everyday. I opened up a checking account with PenFed, going to apply again in 6 months or so. I hope my increased scores + relationship with them allows me to get approved. 5% on gas and 3% on groceries is pretty sweet, to be honest. Plus, the card looks cool, and I've never seen it in my life (I work retail, I see every type of credit card at work, but never a PenFed one).

 

I have never heard of higher priced gas for using CC in my life.

 

Yeah, using a credit card to pay for gas is a great idea, First it cuts the cost of gas a little bit, second it builds credit having an active credit card that is always paid off at the end of the month.

 

The gas stations around me charged 4.29 for credit gas and 4.25 for cash. I used my CC and paid only 4.23 after I used my 2% cash back card. Of course all that cash back comes back annually

I'm hoping to get accepted by Penfed credit union and get their Penfed Visa Cash Back rewards card which offers 5% gas back so that about 18-20 cents off.

 

I second this, never in my life have i heard of gas stations charging more for using a credit card..

On the up, using a credit card for gas and paying it off on time will increase your credit.

 

My gas station has a 4.10 sign for regular gas and when you enter from a different direction, its 3.80 for cash

 

With a generic cashback card if you use it to pay through paypal and keep trading over and over it will cover some of the paypal fees. With a cash back card in general its better to just buy everything on it then pay it off at the end of the month.

 

They have a cash price and a CC price at gas stations around where I live. That's why I use cash most of the times (sometimes I use my CC to get the cash back/build credit - but it's not often).

 

the reason the offer gas cheaper with cash because they prefer you to pay that way, by using a credit card, they have to worry about fees taken by the company for the transaction. Iv heard of some gas stations doing it, but none around me.

as for saving money on gas with a credit card, BP Visa is the way to go

 

Use your credit card. No major gas outlet charges more for CCs (maybe for amex but that's a diff story)

 

Usually gas stations charge 0.10$ for cash so i guess that would be moree cost effective in the long run than your cc

And also there are ways to save the same if not more on gas with cash. I live close to a casino that is always 3 cents cheaper then the SA's and Kwik Trips that are close to me also. Then if you become a member by simply giving your name and a email address you get a card that gives 5 cents off every time you use it, along with points you get to get free things in store. So that's a guaranteed 8 cents off, and majority of the time there like 5 - 7 cents cheaper then everyone else. But i know not everyone has this option.

SA also has reward programs where you can get 2 cents off a gallon by getting a rewards card along with points. You can combine these with a coupon on the back of a Cub receipt (grocery store up here) to get 7 cents off a gallon. Which is 9 cents off. You just got to explore your options around you. There's great money saving devices that if found and im only 16. You just got to look around locally.

In my town, there are several gas stations that provide cheaper prices when a person pays with actual cash instead of using credit. If you have the benefits of receiving cash back with your card, I don't see how it would be much of an issue for you either way. Just depends on the actual gas station you go to.

 

It's very common up in the southern New York area, where I used to live.

 

Where I live, using a CC is a higher price. Because of that, I mainly use cash.
