Switching to linux is a pain in the ass. You will be limited on your every day windows programs that you can run. Personally I like ubuntu but I can't make the switch due to lack of support for most programs I use daily. If you happen to use Netflix stay with windows. There maybe a fix to be able to watch netflix now aside from running a virtual machine. If you're wanting to change up your desktop a little I would recommend looking into RainMeter. Also, if you ever install a fresh copy of windows and want to get rid of a lot of pre installed crap you can use decrapifier

Thanks, but I know all about windows customization and I've used Rainmeter, AveDesk and a ton of other programs.

What I was thinking of doing is buying a new hdd and putting whatever distro on that and fuck around with it.

That would probably be the best thing to do. You could also test it out using a virtual machine. I believe virtualbox is free.

    good luck

Got both the .iso's. I'm ready to go, I just need my new hdd so I can fuck around with distro's and so on.

(Yes, I know about partitioning. I don't want to do that.)

Why would you NOT want to do partitioning? That's as crazy as saying windows is too bloated, this is 2012.

I was never talking about Windows 8.

Why would I not? I'd just rather have an extra hdd to fuck around with. And you're saying Windows nowadays isn't bloated? How about it using 1GB of my ram on fucking idle without anything open? How is that NOT bloated?

Mod, close this. It's getting way off topic.

Point being, I said 2012.. 8gb of ram is $30-$40.. You're acting like someone who was just introduced to other OS's and it being 2005. Choose depending on features and what you need, windows is not bloated on current standards in any manner. And unless you plan on setting up a raid configuration, or simply need the extra space on another HDD, then it's not worth doing since partitioning is extremely simple and easy. I'm not sure what your current HDD capacity is though, but most OS's including Windows Vista/7/8 aren't that big.. HDDs on the other hand are at least double the price they were last year, 1tb HDD is about $100 atm, and almost everything else is $30-$80 regardless of the size. Sticking with a single 1tb HDD would really be all you need for multiple os's, partitions, tons of media, unless of course you need the room for something specific.

What he's saying is that if you have a computer from the last 3 or 4 years, something using 1GB of RAM shouldn't really be of any concern to you..

Windows does get annoying sometimes it has to many things installed that we probably dont even knew we had...worst part is the virus and maybe this is off topic but if you can afford a MAC Pro i would recommend that
