It's bloated, full of crap and it isn't as customizable as I want it to be.

Wait and see what the new version will be like, I have read good things about it. If you still don't want to use Windows then try Debian, I heard that is pretty good.

Well, Ubuntu is off the list straight away. Thanks though.

Windows 8? That's partly the reason I'm moving to linux. As for debian, I will probably use it if I don't find another distro I like.

What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.

Archlinux is good for desktop use if you want to customize everything.

Arch, good idea. I'll have to do a lot of reading, though. I'll probably be using Openbox for the shell.

(Bet I'm terribly wrong about something there.)

How much experience do you have with Linux/Unix, command line usage, etc... Also, how much TIME do you want to put into learning and fiddling in order to customize and install things.

My first instinct is to say not to use Debian because it's too much of a hassle unless you have some prior experience with Linux in general or want to spend time learning and playing around when things don't work. (disclaimer: I use Debian as well as Windows)

Without hearing your response to my questions, my suggestions would be any of the following:
Also, you could try this little survey to see some suggestions based on your situation.

I find it funny that you're "fed up with Windows"

Being full of crap isn't really a deal breaker anymore since computers have gotten more powerful. I'm not a Windows advocate, I just think you're doing this for the wrong reason.

Anyway, I used to like Fedora back in like Fedora 10 days, I haven't tried any more recent ones. I have Backtrack installed, but it's probably not what you're looking for.. Ubuntu and Mint are probably your best bet, then Fedora. Ubuntu and Mint just work and will probably give you the least amount of problems. I don't know why you don't like Ubuntu, you should, it does exactly what you want it to.

BSD is the way to go though, I prefer it to Linux. OpenBSD would be the best, but it takes a bit of knowledge to work. PcBSD is probably best for you because of the GUI.

Thanks for the input. I did that test and it reccomended 3 distros that I didn't want to use. openSUSE came up though, I'll take a look into that.

I'm really not knowlageable enough to run KDE.

Well, I'm not a total newbie when it comes to linux (in general), I'd say I'm "intermediate" as for knowlage.

BackTrack is obviously a no-no, Fedora may be a good choice but Ubuntu and Mint just no. I don't like them at all.

    Thanks.

I have to say I recommend Ubuntu. I like it's relatively Mac-ish feel that it accomplishes without actually being a mac.
Especially with 11.10 and the upcoming 12.6, I am looking forward to it.

Well, I don't want my OS to be like OS X by any stretch of the imagination.

Well, recently Ubuntu has become let's say.. shit for the lack of a better word and Mint is pretty much the same as ubuntu.

 Until a few releases ago, Crunchbang was based on Ubuntu. Anyway, just install Crunchbang. Openbox is the default DE and it's easy to set up.

I've got crunchbang installed on my laptop and it's great. I've got bbLean installed as my shell on my desktop now so I'm having fun with that at the moment.

Cool. One thing I always like to do is to set up a quake-like terminal. There's a howto for urxvt here:

    http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/urxvt#quake_like_terminal

Alternatively there are other packages like Guake you can probably find in the repos that are set up out of the box.

Terminator is also really cool terminal emulator, check that one out :D
