Solid State Drives and Hard Drives?

What's the difference between them and why are SSDs more expensive?

SSD drives are like RAM, fast.. But non-volatile (Meaning they don't loose their data.. When power goes off). They are quiet and energy efficient to the max.

Hard Drives use moving parts to write information to the disk. They have been around for a long time making the price low. It writes information to the platter and is very noisy, slow, and produces a ton of heat.

The ssd is comprised of no moving parts and calls data from flash memory, this makes the transfer rate many times faster than the hdd, produces less heat, and is quiet.

The reason they cost so much now is because they are just beginning to make their way into the PC market, as time goes the price will gradually fall. At the moment though it IS worth it in my opinion to get one but nothing above the 120gb mark, they will get larger and cheaper though as time goes on.

Exactly. They are almost $1/gb, which isn't that bad. Standard hard drives use to be the same.

Lots of writing to SSD's (not reading) can cause them to deteriorate. Just something to keep in mind.. There's really no reason to be saving loads and loads of data to SSD's. They're too expensive first of all but aside from that there isn't necessarily that much data your computer needs to access quickly in order to run smoothly.
