what do you classify as being fat?

After a discussion at uni, it was surprising how different our views were on what we class as being fat. We know the BMI isn't a very useful tool, neither is dress size as it depends on your build and height etc.

But when you see a person what makes you think 'they are fat'?()

On the other hand, where is the line with being too skinny?

Please be sensitive to others views etc, this is just for fun.

 

Men - Moobs, gut/belly over their belt (by a few inches, not just a little), can't jog/run short distances, get winded easily on the stairs

Women - When they start to not look sexually attractive, that's based on opinion though

Skinny would be when you can start to see your bones, wrists that you can easily wrap your hand around, same with ankles, eyes sunk into sockets etc.

 

Would have to disagree with being able to wrap hand around wrist/ankles. Would have to agree with everything else Flight stated, besides adding some of the others for women such as the getting winded easily and cant run/jog short distances.

 

I don't know why people get to that stage? If I feel I am putting on a few pounds then I cut back or do a few sit ups before I go bed. It is easy not to get fat.

 

I know for some people they do have medical conditions, and thought about that after my previous post... Jogging/running short distances could easily be caused from say asthma and other lung/heart issues

 

tbh i just look at fat by a person's stomach.

 

I determine who's fat and who isn't with common sense.

Not quite sure how to describe it... I just look at some people and think that they're fat. I think it tends to be big people who don't look good because of their size (ie. someone who had no muscle or whatever would look much worse than someone of the same size who did)

 

Obvious roundness.
And for "too thin", I guess that "bony" appearance. Sunken eyelids/cheek bones

Not sure how you can usually tell if someone cannot see their dick, unless they are really fat. I honestly don't know how fat someone should be at the least to not be able to see it.

Size is one of the factors, I can't really think of another. Someone being merely overweight at 5FT tall would look, as said above, really round. It's just with their short height they do tend to look fatter. If someone was 7FT and overweight, they wouldn't really look fat. It would more look like they have a big build. As also said above, it depends on your build.

Personally being too skinny is when your elbows are really sharp and the bone sticks out, it isn't always the case though. Not to mention with most parts of your body, such as your spine sticking out without even trying. Basically it's when your bone starts sticking out and makes you look less attractive, at least to me.

I disagree with this. Moobs, I've seen people that have larger moobs than others, I find it weird and unattractive, some even skinnier than others. As mentioned above, not being able to run for long periods of time could be caused from asthma or even smoking (Plays a role at least). Not to mention at the gym, I saw this overweight guy running for a long time. Don't really wish to argue with the gut/belly over one's belt, having a big gut can be inherited and the only thing that would really be bigger than normal is the stomach. But you need to know that it isn't "fat".

 

You have to be pretty damn big to not be able to see it. It's easy for me to decide whether someone is fat or not for obvious reasons. There's no question someone is overweight when it affects their health and keeps them from doing things they should normally be able to do. Same goes for being too skinny. You should feel healthy and have at least some physical strength. I'd also say you're lacking too much fat if you can see most of your ribs when standing naturally.

 

Men: When your pectoral muscles are covered in fat and able to be seen through your shirt; same goes for your stomach.

Women: When you have fatty legs (jiggly) or a round stomach.

 

Yeah, I know you'd have to be really fat to not be able to see it.

But I have no idea what the bare minimum would be in order to not be able to see it. I see fat guys all the time but I don't know if they can see their dicks, unless they were really fat and it was obvious they couldn't.

 

Inherited big gut? Yeah no way man, if you have a big gut it's most probably because you're fat because of your own eating habits. Rest of the cases it's some medical thing. U may inherit a slower metabolism or such but it all boils down to what you consume; you won't have a big gut if you eat less than you consume.

And if you've seen skinny people with moobs they're really not that skinny or maybe you're mixing moobs with muscles (which may look the same with a shirt on.)
