My Recent Graphic Artwork/Designs- Opinions?

Some of my recent work is below. I really want to become a graphics designer. Do I have the right kind of style? I'm only 17, so I have a lot of room for improvement... I used GIMP to create all of that!

What's your opinion of these?


^ Designed that all myself; the brushes used, the moon, everything.

^ Designed a background for my smartphone lol.

^ Never really tried to draw an eyeball before, so I took a shot at it.

^ Traced over a picture I took and made it cool.

^ Might use that as my new signature. Unfortunately, I don't have C4D or Illustrator, or even PhotoShop, so I can't conform and create the same 3D effects you see everywhere... but I think my work could be good enough to stand out regardless...?

 

You should look up Feng Zhu on youtube and watch his entire tutorial series. There are like 53 lessons, most with multiple parts, in the serious and they really help on digipainting

 

o.o I'm not only interested in 'digipainting,' but I'll check those out! Not all of them, of course lol

 

How long have you been doing this?..

I like these,, they look okay
as you said yourself, theres room for improvement,, but that's always the case actually,,

On the first one i don't like the hills,, they are to roundish,, the moon and falling start is good but the wavy line going right trough the middle,, that i don't understand,, seems out of place in my opinion

The second is great,, Only thing is that it doesn't have sense of depth,, for example,, the road is almost the same width at top as it is on the bottom,, it would create more depth if you made the road small in width at the top and bigger at the bottom

I like the eye the most out of these,, nothing wrong with it

The flower one,, i only like the background.. maybe color in the flower?

The last one has good effects but i don't like the colors,, they don't match,, search "Color Combos" on google and look through some colors that match and use them

Anyways,, I suggest you try other things,, don't stick with the same style,, you can find lots of inspiration in other techniques,, and read lots of tutorials and look at the work of artist that inspire you,, that tends to help in your own designs.

Hmm, well I actually just started to do things like this in the past month lol. I've been drawing for quite a while, but I'd never really tried doing any big projects. Before, I was just making normal signatures, only experimenting with text and effects...

I only spent a few hours, at most, on one of these; the rest were like hour-long projects... except for the eye. That took a long time. I know it takes time to get good results, so maybe that's the case?

I wasn't going for a realistic approach in the first one. I was trying to make it look like a page out of a story book

The second one, yeah, I wasn't sure about how narrow to make the road lol..

I only spent like 20-30 mins on the flower one lol. It shows.

& I was going for a lot of different colors in the last one, I didn't want to make it match. I love that it clashes lol.

For a month?.. wow man,, then you seriously are on the right way!,, and it's a VERY good thing you know how to draw,, after 5 years of designing i WISH i started out earlier with drawing,,

Yea,, but you're definitely on the right way man,, just keep practicing and experiment allot,, And maybe on your next piece try to use your creativity,, your piece has to tell a story on itself,, The idea and concept of a art piece is what makes it perfect, that is what i discovered along the way

 

I love the eye. It's a very detailed, interesting piece.

I love the flower wallpaper, it looks so natural and very colourful. Keep it up buddy!

 

There's no man here lol but yeah, I feel like I'm getting better pretty fast. I'm trying to rush so that I can move onto bigger and better projects, but I guess it takes time >.<

you give great advice! I always hold back and try to use common concepts and ideas... time to think outside the box, I guess.

Eye was cool, the sig was best.

 

Oh in 5 years i did MANY styles of design,, but now i only make Logo's, websites, flyers and websites,,

But yea,, best advice i can give you really,, Your piece has to have a meaning and a story,, You gotta make people stop scrolling and really look at what you made,, And really invest time in your projects,, many beginners just try to pump out one piece after another without thinking about it (i was also like that),, but you really gotta take it easy and take your time,, Hope this helps in some way

 

I suggest converting illustrator and learning to use that - you have a pretty decent grasp of shapes/colours and most of your work is far more to do with illustration than photoshop/art.

 

So, pretty much, an artist/designer's greatest tool is their imagination! I have to learn to use that more often haha

Can you make a living and get paid enough by designing those things? I've wanted to try designing logos, and to learn how to design websites. I've only made a few flyers... but I don't know if it's a serious career. Any advice about that will help me a lot ^_^
