Web Hosting/Building a website help needed

I hope this is the correct section.

I recently brought a domain name and have upgraded to web hosting etc.

I've already set up my email @my domain but I am completely new to this and have never gone about building a website etc...

Need some tips on a few things if anyone is feeling helpful:

Firstly what software should I use to design my website. I can probally get my hands on DreamWeaver for free pretty easily, but if you know of any serious better programs let me know please. I used Dreamweaver in school and the e-pages where just like horrid looking grids, but im sure I can make a nice looking webpage in Dreamweaver, I just don't know enough about it.

And then basically how do I upload my design to the domain so it is visable when people go to my 'website'. And will I need to write any code for any bits as I do not have a clue how to write code yet aha.

Also one feature I would like to add in the webpage if possible is a seperate page where a password needs to be entered to access it. If anyone knows how to do that and would teach me it would be so helpful.

Any help you can give will be very appreciated, whether porgram recommendations or teaching me a few tricks.

    Thank you in advance!

Who did you go to to buy the domain/hosting? Some providers offer templates and web building software that is really easy to use. There are plenty of templates out there as well that you can customize with a free HTML editor. Makes a good looking website with less effort :)

Sounds like you are a bit of a web design noob (no offence meant) so maybe try a Content Management System(CMS) such as Drupal.

In my hosting Cpanel there is a thing called the fantastico script installer. You can use this to install CMSs easily to your site.

    Hey,
Dreamweaver is more than suitable for an entry level site. But I would recommend you try some jscripts and stuff like that to make it more fancy. Also, learning SQL can be very useful.
