with words that begin with a vowel sound, the singular countable indefinite article is "an", for words that don't (ie. words that begin with a consonant) the article "a" is used.

notice that the word "name" is not uncountable,does not refer to anything specific, and begins with a consonant. therefore, the correct article in this case would be "a name"
