Gambling in RS leads to Gambling IRL?

This just occured to me. Runescape could potentially be breeding gamblers irl.

Is this a problem?

 

For those that are very into the game of runescape, yes. I would probably think differently about people who dont play the game as much.

 

You would think most people would know the difference between VIDEO GAME gambling and REAL LIFE gambling, and how real life gambling can seriously effect you, but you never know. Maybe there is some people that bring their RS gambling to RL gambling.

 

Say people stake a 2B partyhat, that's ~$600? So maybe if people think they can win that in-game, they might bring it into real life. I don't know though...

 

There is still a huge difference betwee winning in a game, and winning in real life.

In a way RS is like one of those free poker sites where you can also pay to play. The free version lets you win lots, then the 'real' payed matches clean you out.

I like to think that people will be able to distinguish between losing real assets in real life versus pixels, but honestly there are some really dumb people out there.

 

There will always be dumb people, but it's their fault if they think they can win IRL just beause they can win in runescape xD

 

Yeah, they deserve it tbh. Still I could imagine something like this getting onto the news if the world wasn't bery busy with stabbings, etc.

 

Potentially. However, it could teach people a life lesson. Gambling is a risk.

You win big or you lose big. It can go either ways.

 

Or it could be a life lesson, that if you gamble you can lose big.

 

I personally dont think so, to people who dont RWT its worth time not money, whereas we know better lol, people on runescape just see it as something to show off with and whether they win or lose in life it has no big deal

 

Even then some people may think to use this new found gambling skill to real world applications.

Gambling in RS is equivalent to gambling in IRL. It is basically the same thing. Gambling in any means is gambling. Doesn`t matter if its online, at a casino etc. Look at people who gamble through online poker, its just the same as staking on RS. What distinguishes the real gamblers on runescape from the casusal runescape players is RWT. If you buy and sell your profits and winnings from staking, then yes, your gambling is equivalent to real life gambling. However, if your a casual runescape player and you don`t RWT it doesn`t really matter because all of your profits stay inside the virtual realm anyways (RuneScape itself) and doesn`t affect your income in real life.

And yes, I agree with your statement that RuneScape is in fact a breeding ground for soon to be real life gamblers. Though I suspect only a small minority of runescape players will fall into this gambling trap. Only the people who stake big and sell those winnings for big profit are at risk of turning into real life gamblers and indulging themselves into serious real life gambling. For the casual runescape gambler, it isn`t really a problem as most of them know how to control themselves. RuneScape teaches gamblers a lesson and even the big time gamblers learn from their mistakes. I find it funny how Jagex tries to crack down on gambling by getting rid of the dice game and horse game, but by bringing back free trade and no limits at the duel arena, they are in fact promoting gambling.

TLDR; Gambling is Gambling. Doesn`t matter if you do it over the computer or in person, in a card game or an MMORPG. Gambling is Gambling.

 

Yes I would say gambling in real life is the same on runescape no matter what way you put it as if we take staking for an example you are betting money in hope to win some more money. Exactly gambling.

 

Gambling in Runescape can spark an addiction.

However, difference is you are gambling with virtual money with no real value.

So your saying 1M rsgp has no real value? Why do we have a gold market then? Why do we have GP sellers who sell 1M RSGP at the price of 0.70-0.90 cents per mill?

 

Even though I'm a hardcore staker, the idea of gambling IRL has never crossed my mind.
