Drinking age - 18 or 21?

This. If you are old enough to give up all of your rights, and go fight for your country, risking your life, you should be entitled to have a drink.

 

I'm 19 and that's the legal age in Canada. I've been drinking underage since I was like 15 and I don't feel much different now that I'm legal. I think 17 or 18 is a good age, I think it's mostly up to the parents to teach smart alcohol consumption and that the correlation between age and the disability to make smart decisions somewhat fades around 17.

 

Does the United States have the highest required age to purchase/consume alcohol?

 

18 for everything, got to grow up someday and it's the rule over here I think it fits nicely.

 

18 you are an adult you should be able to do whatever the hell you want.

 

21. I think that as 18, you are still pretty much a teenager, and although many are responsible, and mature, there are many who would simply get drunk "4 the lulz", and purely because it's now legal for them to do so.

Plus, I dislike walking down streets with steady streams of vomit flowing through them.

 

I actually dont really know what to think about drinking, at 18 .. or 21
i think drinking is bad overal, i'm from the netherlands and you can start drinking at 16 here,
i think parents of children shouldnt block teenagers from drinking, let them know what it feels like. let them get sick from too much alcohol..
when parents say children cant do things, they like to do it, things they are not aloud to do are exciting.
my parents gave me my first alcohol at the age of 13, tried it a couple of times at home, never did it again, i'm almost 20 now.
i do smoke weed, wich i am aloud to do..
i smoke about 4-5 joints in the weekend, its all i do.
but i think, when my parents would have told me i cant.
i would have done it on the streets, and alot more.

My name is Taylor, and I'm an alcoholic. Drinking IS bad. NOBODY can control drinking. It ALWAYS becomes a problem. I am a prime example of that. I used to hate drinking- until I started. My drinking brought me to a deep state of depression and eventually led me to the middle of nowhere in a stolen Chevy Silverado (accross state lines, over 24 hrs, and with the wrong plates) not to mention the gun I had held to my head.

The point being: DON'T START DRINKING - ONCE YOU POP THE "FUN" DON'T STOP.

 

Would just create a bigger problem if you enforce it now, Its worked fairly well at 18.

 

People that say they have a drinking problem, and telling others not to do it why would you honestly?

I'm not trying to have a go at anybody who does say this, but do not deter somebody from enjoying a drink because you are addicted/depressed. I love going out drinking with my mates. That's what it should be, not something you do when you get home from work/school.

 

Germany is a very water-scarce country. Did you know that one cup of water can yield five cups of beer?
I can see what process that the country went through and ended up with a drinking age that low, but not in the States.

And I believe that the drinking age should be 21.
I've seen a LOT of people in my country starting to drink as soon as they are 18 (old enough for college) and end up getting into a lot of trouble and regretting it later on.
21-18, 3 is some psychological number and thus is the right age for drinking, as it is when people will be responsible enough to take care of themselves. I don't have anything to back me up on this, but I'd be glad if someone else helped me out here. But if there is no difference between 21 and 22, then let this argument pass.

I have no problem with the smoking age being 18, since I have not seen much people smoking cigarettes anyways, due to pricing and such. Plus, you guys prefer weed over cigarettes, don't you?

If your an adult you should be able to whatever the fuck you want to. It seems ridiculous that it is illegal until 21. There is already a stigma in the US at least that it is alright to drink after 18.

Basically agree with this.
However from my experience, the age limits for alcohol and cigarettes never stopped anyone underage who wants to acquire them. People around me have been drinking since 14-15 and some have smoked since 12 or so. So is there really any point debating over those limits?

The only limit that actually enforces anything is the driving age which I believe should never be under 18.

 

The age for everything like this should be 18, its the age you turn into an adult and can vote. If your legally responsible for everything else, you should be given all the priveldges, not have to wait three more years because they think in those 3 years you will learn to handle your alcohol or be more mature, which is stereotyping younger adults.

 

Drinks with a low alcohol percentage such as beer etcetera should be allowed to buy/drink on the age of 16.
While high(er) alcohol percentage drinks such as whisky should be allowed to buy/drink on the age of 18.

Atleast, that is my opinion.

 

If you are able to put your life on the line for this country, go to war and kill human beings and risk the chance of being killed, adopt children, buy cigarettes, then why are you not able to go into a liquor store and buy some beer, i think the age limit should be changed just think its unfair, 18 year olds go to war never even tasting a beer which is upsetting

 

In my opinion, bars and clubs should be 21, and offsale/liquor stores 18.

Lets face it, pretty much any 18 year old will get a hold of booze if they want it anyway, so why not just let them buy it at 18? Bars are where you see the shit-disturbers that just try and cause problems, act cocky, pick fights and generally just be a jackass, I would know because I've seen it and done it myself.

Drinking is 18 where I live, but it should be bumped to 21 imo. There are too many young idiots under the influence in NZ that get themselves killed or others.
