Not really suprised. I mean people don't check for the proper emails or request a pm.

I'm quite surprised at all the new-user bashing going on here. I'm willing to bet more than half of all the posters in this thread were scammed at some point in their sythe careers, show some sympathy.

You can't just blame new people for falling for imposters, not using trusted traders etc. The point is that they're new to the system and they're obviously not going to be aware of every trick in the book, not to mention that most kids are under the age of 17 when they sign up so real-life common sense isn't exactly at a high point either.

The real reason so many people get scammed is that scammers can get away with their actions without any repercussions except a forum ban, which is easily evaded. You can't blame the scammed for the actions of the scammer, it's almost like telling theft victims that they could have done more to prevent their theft, and that it was essentially their fault that the theft occurred at all.

No one actively causes crime except for the ones committing the crime

ive been here for sometime now 6 years+ infact and no it doesnt surprise me people are so uneducated when it comes to internet scams. I think there needs to be more clarification here. Like all accs being sold must have recovery checks to get the acc back if it gets took ect.

    No, not at all.
It's still the internet, you don't know who's behind the other computer, so you should always be careful.
Also the stupidity of people who don't check if the msn's are correct, or are too lazy to ask for a PM, like Djweasel said.

Theres scamming everywhere not just here. Any site that offers trading without protection you need to trade with extreme caution on. I would never sell gold or buy gold from anybody but a EXTREMELY TRUSTED member, its the same everywhere you go, The people who get scammed now are simply, i hate to say it, but dumb. So many easy ways to avoid scams, never rush a trade, double check all msn/skype names etc. If you feel uncomfortable with a trade in any way, shape, or form immediately cancel it. Or go to PA <--FTW

If more people learnt safe trading and such, then there shouldn't be as many scams. Although the safest way to not get scammed when trading is to not trade at all.

On sythe you meet two types of people. The arrogant people who will trust everyone with their banks thinking that they are rich. They might even have a few vouches that are fake or outrageous offers. Those are easy scammers but the people never see it coming. You can usually tell by the scam reports. Then you get the 'jewish' type of people. (If it offends anyone here ignore it :)). They will use an OMM for an upgrade if they could. However, they end up trusting someone with buttload of vouches and get scammed. That's why you see some guru or some well known people with BANNED next to them. Kinda sad, but if someone made thread about selling 2 christmas crackers going first to guru you would see a banned guru on the thread.

So far I've been reading some replies and I have to say it's fairly 'amusing' to see there are atleast two people banned on each page. It might be my background but so far I have been able to spot all risky trades. At the beginning I decided to take some risks, which where actually too good to be true. I've made over 10.000 posts on various RuneScape forums in the post 5 years and in all those hours of forum browsing it has become a habit to pick out sketchy people.

I think most people are getting scammed by going first because the other guy has a "better" profile eg. vouches, ranks, posts. I've seen enough people that are proud of 30+ vouches when the majority of them are for <2M trades for some sort of skilling service. Newcomers usually don't realise everything about the worth of vouches and end up going first.

I think most people aren't capable of thinking of the intentions and possible risks for the person they are trading with. If one has only been selling RSGP there has been NO risks for him - he sold all his RSGP already and the cash is on his bank (not talking about chargebacks etc.). On the other hand, some people DO have something to risk such as a reputation, possible chargebacks of other people because 'they are banned anyways', account recovery's because of karma, etc.

Most people just don't look into the background of someone. Copying someones email and pasting into google can give you a warning already - it has happened multiple times that the e-mail matches on other forums. When you go to their profile and find out they are banned you know enough. The search option can avoid lots of trouble aswell - especially at name sales.

A guide would be nice - but I think it will just benefit a very small amount of people. But still, you should make it as it's nice to avoid even one scam.

Yeah I completely agree RunescapeJJ, very well written reply. I know what you mean about some people gaining xx amount of vouches from tiny things even such as free skilling and then expecting to be considerably more trusted than others. I don't really do all that much trade myself, I buy or sell a bit of RSGP here and there depending on how im doing. Most of my vouches come from MM'ing currently and I really enjoy that to be honest. Allows me to stay active here and still gain my rep with decent value of transaction in my vouches. I'd quite like to know what people actually think of MM vouches, as it was never my money but it in my opinion shows big trust to be handed rsgp. And to know your helping two other sythe members who view you as more trusted is quite a good feeling.

Im also hopefull for the v4 update and that it will actually force people to read guides on how to trade. Or atleast make them more publically veiwable.

Had some very interesting replies in this thread so I guess thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply and share their thoughts.

People who get scammed are mainly new comers who are not used to trading and the safety side. But anyone who gets scammed when they know risk it's there own fault.

Huh? What's the connection between your post and the threads line?

Anyways, we shouldn't blame the Sythe mods, they have done a great job on spreading informations to avoid scamming. And, no, I'm not surprised people are getting scammed, a bunch of poor fellas will always fall for the traps.
