Music people listen to? Help me out

I'm pretty tired of listening to stuff from the 90s and below, and I feel like I need to catch up a bit on new music. So I'm asking you guys to post up anything you think is worthy of a listen to help me out.

I realise hip hop and rap are going to account for about 90% of responses, but I care little about gangstas and beating up bitches and shit, so if you are going to post some, it better be relevant to real life (or at least have some non-superficial meaning to it).

I'm a fan of alternative, I've never listened to many modern boy bands but that seems to be the scene these days so I'm open to it if I like their sound. Stuff like arctic monkeys, foster the people etc. are just a couple off the top of my head, and ones that I seem to hear about all the time. I don't need stuff like RHCP, Foo Fighters, Radiohead etc as I already know and love all their stuff. I'm looking strictly for music from upcoming artists, and ones that are fairly popular with people here.

Also open to electro/dub. I need more.

Pop is a no go, I hate it with a passion. Pop has sucked arse since the 90s.

    Post up :)

For starters, check out Mac Miller, he's pretty much the epitome of what the average kid ages 13-20 listens to (generally), and all Mac Miller basically raps about is smoking weed and having a good time, so if you're even slightly interested in either of those concepts chances are you'll enjoy him.

Also check out the following popular entertainers:

    deadmau5
    J. Cole
    Kanye West
    Coldplay
    Adele
    Kid Cudi
    Daft Punk
    A$AP Rocky
    Drake
    The Weeknd
    Earl Sweatshirt
    Chris Brown

The list goes on, just check any song out by those artists and see if you like it, you never know when you could find a new favorite song =]

Currently, the "in" thing is Dubstep. Meh, I don't really enjoy it, but apparently the 'best' dubstep artist is Skrillex.

I quite like Ed Sheeran, with his acoustic guitar :3
Avicii are also quite popular at the moment, due to their song "Levels".
    I also like "Gotye".

All of that shit is pop.... Nobody over the age of 15 listens to mac miller.
Skrillex kinda sucks (sorry). Just because lots people listen to an artist doesn't mean he/she is "best".

Wait. I still listen to radiohead (lots). Just keep listening to radiohead. Foster the people/arctic monkeys are pop. Theres some good electro/"indie" pop out there, don't rag on the whole genre.

If you like any of those, hit me up with a private message and i'll give you more music similar to that song

I don't understand why some members are posting such redundant artists like Adele, Skrillex, OF, and anything "Club-banger" or Dubstep related.
Without trying to take on a 'hipster' mindset, anything played on the radio these days is rarely good music - any actual good songs that are aired quickly get overplayed and the artist becomes as boring as an armchair. The music you should do your best to look out for is content from artists that have been out for a while or released solid albums - not groups that are one-offs. If it's an older artist, and have shown they can withstand the wearing of time, then chances are you'll be able to continue listening to them over and over without getting sick of it all.

From the top of my head, my favorite artists would have to be:

    Bombay Bicycle Club
    Flume
    The Strokes
    Bloc Party
    Jaime xx
    Foals
    Freelance Whales
    Friendly Fires
    Darwin Deez
    Has-Lo
Notorious XX (A mash-up collection by the group Wait What)
    Clams Casino
    City And Colour
    Daughter
    James Vincent Mcmorrow
    Bon Iver
    Blink 182
    Ratatat

You should also give some of the New Zealand dub and drum & bass artists a listen - Groups like Shapeshifter have been around forever, but never get old.
