A conundrum on serving in the military

In college I was part of the AFROTC program I took an enlistment oath to support and defend the constitution. In the beginning of my my junior year and held a rank of airman 1st class for 2 years. Five days before graduation I was disenrolled from the program and given a honorable discharge for the department of the Air Force. I never commissioned and never served active duty but I was considered to be in the reserves. To this day if someone asks me if I served I don't know what to tell them.

What would you guys say if you were in the same situation?

Pretty much this. I would have said it in a nice way but, I agree. Dressing up at school isn't being in the military.

No, you didn't serve. That's like someone saying that they served because they signed up for the draft.

And do you really want to tell someone that you served yet were never in combat?

I'm glad that there are two sides discussing now, Here is the paperwork that I received after being discharged, and yes I did go to basic training. As a matter of fact I was in the top 3rd of the graduating class.

You didn't serve, in my opinion. However, you did learn what it takes to be a soldier in the US, and were capable of doing so.

Don't let them get to you. Had you not been discharged you would have been an officer. Which can be more challenging than enlisted. Just say you were in ROTC.

A conundrum on serving in the military

Serving in the military and going to basic training are different things. Anyone can go to basic training for a few weeks and graduate but that doesn't mean you have served any military time. That would be like staying in jail over night and saying you pulled some real prison time. ROTC isn't the military, it just teaches you about the military while you play military. That is just my opinion, seems like saying you served military time would be disgraceful to the people who actually do/have serve(d) military time. In no disrespect to you, but that is just my opinion. I have family that have pulled several tours of duty and have been in the military for years.

I don't feel like you were in the military, but you were in a program that prepared you for it and it is a shame that you didn't pursue a career in it.

I go to Kings Point (one of the 5 federal service academies), made it through plebe year, and have been out to sea on military ships for months as a cadet (I'm in the Navy with a military id). If someone asked me if I've served I would say fuck no.

Don't take this the wrong way, but your a candy ass ROTC fag who could've graduated, you don't have any reason to say you've served.

Quoted from the article "However, one need not complete a term of service to receive an honorable discharge."

    That's why you got it.

I'd tell people that I fulfilled my duty to the Constitution to the fullest extent possible by refusing to participate in wars that run contrary to that very same Constitution.
