Do models lack self respect for themselves?

I got this topic as an english essay last semester and I think it may open a nice discussion here.

Do you guys think models such as Victoria's Secret models lack self respect for themselves?

 

I think some might, but some do it for the money, which I heard was alot.

 

Very true a point i used in the essay but at the same time modeling is entertainment and some models do it for fun, and what i was trying to say was do these models who do it because they love modeling lack self respect?

 

I think it depends on how someone defines 'lack self respect'. Because for some people e.g. 'showering every other day is lack of self respect because your not keeping yourself clean'. But whereas other people might consider 'prostitution is a lack of self respect'. So in answer to your question, it varies due to peoples views on lack of self respect.

 

Well, wouldn't you have to get to know them before making an assertion? Or at least reading a little bit more about them.

 

Very valid point! I don't think you can make such a generalisation in such a situation!

However, my opinion is that most models actually do it because they like it and modelling is something that they are passionate about. I don't see why they are lacking respect for themselves by modelling.

 

I don't think so. I model for a few agency's (just starting out ) and many of the girls/guys I know have been truly superb people with high esteem and self respect.

 

I don't think its fair to generalize all models as suffering from a lack of self-respect. I'm sure there are loads of confident, outgoing models who are completely happy with themselves.

Just like any other profession though, I'm sure modelling has its fair share of broken people with low self-esteem and a low body image. I'm sure alot of the people they work with are quite hard on them to maintain their ridiculously small size and keep their weight down constantly, and are also constantly harping on them about what is 'beautiful' and what is not. Over time, or if the model was unconfident in the first place, I could see how this would take a huge toll on your self-esteem and self-image, and ultimately their self-respect.

 

I don't think it's a lack of respect at all.

They have wonderful bodies that make the company's swimwear/lingerie look absolutely sexy and fantastic - which, for lingerie obviously, - is a main selling factor. Nothing to do with lack of respect.

Just throwing out there though, Modeling TAKES a decent self-esteem and self-image - without it, you can rarely portray the kind of confidence that photographers and agencies are looking for

 

Agreed.

One of my good friends is a model, she's really nice and outgoing.

 

Some might feel better, few and far between might feel too thin. They look too thin, that's for sure.

 

Varies on a lot of things, like the type of modeling for an example, but I don't think a Victoria Secret model would have any less self-respect then a Playboy model would, rofl, also depends on the person alone.
