4 yr college vs community college

So I just got a scholarship to college (im a high school jr) for 2k a semester for the 4 years. I was debating if i should go to a 4 yr college and pay the high tuiiton there or to go to my community college for the same level of education (i got a good county college) and transfer my credits and what not to my 4 yr after I get my assosiates degree and everything.

At NIU tution is 16k and R%B is like 10k. The avg finalcial aid is around 10k so that would take my R&B but still leave me with the tuitiona nd books and what not IDK yet. And my Community college is around 6k from what I hear and no clue on the finalcial aid there. I am a ethic student studying in a very female dominated work field so I think my finaicial aid would help alot at eaither school. leme know what you think. thanks guys

From what I know you can only get an Associates from a community college, also you will want to check and see if all your credits will transfer. I took some classes in high school at the community college where I live and then graduated high school and now at a four year university and they would not accept all my classes. Also at a community college I don't think they have dorms for you to live in. Either way you can get an Associates at a 2 year or a Bachelor at a four year which would earn you more money. Also I don't think financial aid will have anything to do with you going into a field dominated by females. Now for your race you could possibly get some aid, but they mostly look at your income or your parents income.

4 year college. Live in a dorm, have fun with friends, meet new people. Community colleges are depressing places.

Get more scholarships and attend a 4-year. If your community college is anything like mine, or the rest of america's for that matter, then a lot of the credits you take at a CC will need to be retaken at a 4-year university because some credits don't transfer. Therefore, even if you get your AA, it'd be a waste of money because you would end up having to be in school for roughly 5 years after highschool instead of 4 years to earn your bachelors.

Don't be worried about money just yet. There's a vast pool of resources, people just looking to give you money for any reason, available for highschoolers. It's mostly offered to seniors, so once you get up there next year, you really have to start working at those scholarships because after you leave HS, it literally shrivels to a quarter of the size in available funds.

Liberal arts is liberal arts. Degrees are degrees.

Community college saves you a TON OF MONEY and in the end it's the same anyway as long as you go to your graduate school.

Can you even get into (legitimate~no online masters programs and shit) graduate programs with only an associates? If so than good luck.... Its hard to stay motivated in community college. The dropout rates are incredibly high. Go to a 4 year school and stay on a good track (sorry not trying to diss anyone at CC). Getting a B.A. will pay off, you'll make much more money long term than just having an associates.

I think the general idea with community college is that you take all your prerequisite courses with a really cheap tuition for two years, then transfer to a 4-year school with most of your basic work done at a fraction of the cost.

You don't know what your talking about. Degrees are not the same. Like other people have said if you complete Community College and get your Associates and then go to a four year school you will be taking some of those classes over and not going right into the program and getting your BA.

Yeah. It is true, YOU have to make sure that you and your advisers are lining up the correct classes that will transfer. It is true that most credits transfer to other colleges but some colleges won't take certain credits from other schools. Most 4 year schools will require maybe a class or two extra that you will have to take there to complete their Gen eds. The 4 year school I was going to go to was going to be 20k - 30k a year, at the community college I am going to right now I am getting all the classes needed to transfer into a 4 year degree for 1/3rd the cost.

Edit: My school has several transfer programs that will transfer a student to almost any local 4 year college seamlessly.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yes I would go to a community college for 2 years and get a assoiates degree AND THENNNN transfer to a 4 year to get my BA. I think my CC is really, REALLY good and getting there credits transfered into 4 year institutions. I want to become a nurse anesthetist and in order to do that I will have to become a nurse. (mostly females) and I know for a fact that some colleges will give financial aid help to get more diversity in there college for somthing like that.

My question was for my gen ed and nursing program should I just go to my CC and spend maybe 12k (Cost not including other scholarships) or to just go to a 4yr and spend maybe 30-40k for the same classes (assuming my credits transfer from my cc to the 4yr).

I wouldnt end in a CC i am just asking if I should start there and transfer or to just go to a 4yr and spend more money for those first to college years

Yeah a lot of CCs have excellent nursing programs that will let you transfer out straight to another (porbably local) 4 year school.

The difference lies in the name, when you say you go to "Harvard" vs "Community College of Arizona" they definitely change their immediate thought, their ignorant thinking costs jobs and shit.

This is what most people choose to do, and what I had chosen to do aswell. Go to a community college, I'm not sure about where you live but the ones here are rather nice, and university like. You can only acheive a Associates from a community college, so I'd do that, then transfer to a university, for an extra to years for your BA, at community college, I paid a total of 420$ including books, for my associates. Where at San Diego State University I would have had to pay close to 12k$. Numbers don't lie. A degree is a degree, unless you get accepted into Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Berkley, Stanford, etc. Then it's a degree from... Yale, Harvard, etc, etc.

But why go at all, you can get the same education from a public library for 80 cents. People don't go to college to learn, they go for degrees.

I go to a community college and it's fantastic, but it is in the state's university system so ALL of my credits are guaranteed to transfer to any four year school in the university system of my state ( All schools except private schools ).

The first two years are the same academics no matter where you attend. I would highly suggest going to a community college, save money and study hard.

Go to a 4 year if you can afford it, if you can't go lower and then transfer afterwards. Always remember, you can afford everything, you just have to go out and get the scholarships.

Goto the college where you have to pay the big bucks to attend. You will be surrounded by more people who actually WANT to learn which will make the course a lot better for you than being surrounded by dropkicks
