Irreverence Towards Religion -- Why Do YOU Do It?

I'm just wondering why people are so irreverent to religion? I'm a live and let live kind of person. I just can't comprehend why people do it.

So: Why do YOU do it?

Edit: I mostly mean inane reverence. Like, referring to God as a, "Fairy in the sky."

 

I keep my religious arguments and my intellectual debates separate. Mixing the two is like feeding your Mogwai after midnight or letting it get wet, it turns into a gremlin - a nasty ugly gremlin. People who the mix the two are confused because it leads to nothing but anger and close-mindedness.

 

Claims deserve reverence based on their merit; religion has none.

 

If you're asking why people don't believe or respect religion, it's likely because:

1) They have no reason to.
2) They are rebellious.

Personally, I'm the first. I've grown up in a Lutheran Christian schooling system, but my family is non religious. I know what Christianity and other religions are about. I know what they believe. I respect a lot of the Christian teachings (though hate a lot of the older ones). However, I do not respect the religion simply because it's there. Not to mention, religion has a lot to answer for in terms of violence and killing.

 

OK. Your irreverence seems grounded. I mean just inane irreverence. Like referring to God as a "fairy in the sky", or something to that affect. I mean, why do you have to be that irreverent/condescending?

I just don't understand the need for that kind of irreverence.

 

There is a place for intelligence and then there is (I suppose) a place for religion. You can't come in an argue personal opinion (which is what religion is) against facts. It doesn't work that way. You can't make someone believe, and to atheist God is just a fairy in the sky.

 

I'm not even just debates. I once asked my friend, "Do you believe in God?" to which he replied, "No, why would I believe in some fucking fairy in the sky?"

I know this isn't irreverence towards religion. I should have made the title irreverence about religion/God.

Why do people need to answer in such a irreverent way? Why couldn't have, "No," sufficed?

 

You can't demand someone to revere a God they don't believe in. You just gotta take it and go.

 

I know I can't. I'm an atheist for future reference. But, I can't see why they do it. I'm not silly enough to believe I can make them stop it. I was just hoping someone who's guilty of doing this could answer my question.

 

I think there are a couple reasons for this most either joking around with other atheists on the religious topic, or speaking with a pseudo-science theist as the two main ones.

Jimmy articulated my thoughts, but I'll also add that I'm aggressive toward religion because it causes a lot of harm. If it was an innocuous superstition I wouldn't bother.

 

Which makes you just as much as a bigot than any religious person.

I think it is quite ignorant for one to display aggression towards a person based off of their belief when you know not of their experiences, knowledge, or insight.
You end up in the boat of those same religious people that attack other religions for their invalidity, which is the exact cause of harm. As you told me, Tyro, it is basically pointless to do so.
Bashing upon another belief is not causing any relief.

It is the different beliefs conflicting with each other that causes harm or no? Even if your belief is the disbelief in a higher power, then you still have a belief that conflicts with that of a higher power, therefore adding more fire to the furnace when little statements are made like that. If you think that religion is so bad, don't bad mouth them, just ignore them.

Vice versa, if a religious person bad mouths someone that doesn't believe in God, then you ignore them because you know their own belief is illogical.

Not to mention you display flat out disrespect by petty little statements such as "a fairy in the sky" and it portrays one's self in a condescending manner.

This is just directed to people in general that do so.

 

I only aim to help people. That's certainly not bigotry.

 

There are reasons why Church and state/science are kept separate. One of them is because they simply don't mix. They contradict each other. I am not religious because there is no proof that anything about any religion is true. On the other hand, there is plenty of proof of scientific theories, such as the theory of evolution.

However, I do understand that some people have been raised being religious, and if that's what they want to be, it doesn't bother me. This is kind of like the gay marriage debate - if it doesn't affect me (and doesn't harm others), why should I really care?

 

Religion is the opium of the people.
Religion is what halts scientific progress (has and IS)
Religion is used for nothing other than CONTROL

Perfect example - the Vatican. You'd think someone following in Jesus' footsteps, the one considered right below God, to be helping starving/dying people instead of chilling on his gold throne all day.

I fucking despise religion. I don't despise the believer, but if we're on the topic of religion, I'll bash the shit out of it and feel no remorse.

 

But did religion tell that man to ignore his people? No. It's the man's fault for being neglectful. I don't see why you would blame religion, but not man.

 

No, but he represents Catholicism as a whole. In fact, that is what separates Christianity FROM Catholicism - the Pope.

So if I'm going to bash Catholicism, it's going to be because of the Pope and his actions.

 

The topic is not bashing religion, it's about doing it in front of their faces.

It is disrespectful as many people are much more moderate or devoted to a virtuous cause (I despise the Vatican as well).
In your own time or in your speech that's fine, as long as the other person does not interpret it as such.
