I think there should be some sort of restriction on wearing the full-face cover while driving. That's really my only concern, other than that I think they should be allowed to dress as they please.

The way I look at this is that they should respect peoples customs and there way of living where they are for example in England I find it highly offensive that women are in most cases forced to wear this because its a sign of opression and I totally disagree with it.

Also its not a done thing in England plus they should make a attempt to blend in with culture and to speak English after all they could be saying anything in a worst case scenario.

Im sorry sir, but have you fucken seen what they do over there to people from the United States? They burn our flag, write threats and have mobs that hate us. I would like to know one "good" reason why I should give a danm about the way they want to look in public? Were not saying you cant wear it, where saying in public places its a no due to threats that are very real.

Let them do what they want. But don't get mad when people make fun of them.

I honestly dont mind them wearing it unless it will get in the way of something that has a chance to drastically injure someone

Alot of men don't like there woman being seen in public display also, it's a sign of power amongst the relationship, in alot of Muslim communities.

While I completely deny that all Muslims are terrorist (it's an absurd assumption), there should be safety precautions. An item of clothing that covers the entire body of a person is illegal in the United States in public places and should remain that way. Now, implying that I'm a terrorist (which I am not), I could theoretically purchase this garb, arm myself with weapons and "go to town" in a public place and still have the whole of my body covered.

It isn't a terrorist garb, but it sure helps in it.

I lol'd so hard at this.

    Banning it is not right.
Start banning other religion's aesthetic beliefs.

The topic that many of you have been talking about in this thread has been wrongly addresses and introduced. Let me give you a brief history of the "balaclava as explained here" and the burka (the full gown).

The women of Islam originally never wore the Burka and the Prophet and Quran only said to cover the hair/head of the woman, not the face. When the Muslims conquered the Byzantine empire and were in Istanbul (used to be Constantinople), the royal ladies and women of the court would cover their faces as a sign of the chastity and purity. Seeing this, the Muslim women also adopted this tradition and began covering their faces. It is not mentioned anywhere in the Hadith (sayings of the Prophet) nor the Quran that women MUST cover their faces. Therefore, this tradition is not IMPOSED upon women, rather, those who do follow it do it out of their beliefs or the beliefs of their forefathers who took the tradition from the Christians.

Now, the reason Muslim women wear full-body coverings is to protect their own chastity. If you go out in the public in a non-muslim country, you will undoubtedly see many women who are scantily-clad and sometimes, seeing a women like that can cause a man to react in a horrible way. Being scantily-clad makes the woman attractive and therefore more vulnerable to sexual harassment/and or rape. That's a pretty big assumption, yes but if you ask any civil lawyer or professor of law or such they will tell you that many rape case victims were wearing minimal clothing or revealing clothing. This is why Muslim women wear long-body gowns, to protect themselves from the eyes of men.

Now going back to the topic of banning Muslim garb, that is completely unethical and a violation of civil rights all over the world. Many men and women all over the world have their own beliefs and follow their own traditions such as the Sikhs. The Sikh men cover their heads with a turban, should the be banned simply because they could be concealing a weapon of some sort in the turban? No, that is a horrible accusation. Similarly, Muslim women should be allowed to wear their garbs in public. I do agree with the idea that Muslim women should not have to wear it in the airport but if so, then there should be a separate screening area for the women BY other Muslim women so that they do not feel uncomfortable. The problem with this idea is that if exceptions are made for these women, then exceptions will have to be made for people of other religious denominations and this would very costly. Therefore, it is wise to allow Muslim women to continue to follow their faith/beliefs and wear their burka's and balaclavas.

Please don't be irrational and begin accusing me out of irrational fears, I am simply justifying a case and presenting my opinion :)

So you are saying that exceptions to laws should be made based on religious tradition? That's funny. The law should not be a respecter of person, creed, or religion because the promotes bias and law, ideally, shouldn't be bias. I murder someone, but you murder someone and call it religious action. We deserve the same punishment, we both just murdered someone. Although that is a black and white way of looking at it, I know there are grey areas in there. What I am getting at is that the law should not be biased anyway because it is inefficient. If I have to write a law that tries to please all third parties then I am not going to write a law because you can't please everyone. You have to define a line that doesn't promote bias towards one group or another.

I recently entered a mall and it was a cold day outside and I had just walked in the doors with my hood on. I walked another shop or two down and a security guard walked up to me and made me take my hood off. If a woman with facial garbs came in why would it not be fair for them to also have to remove it? My hood doesn't even cover my face, just the back of my head.

Laws that are not justified need not be be followed. The US wouldn't exist without this thought.

    There's nothing to think about.

It's their culture and religion and they're allowed to practice whatever they please to practice in America.

Not sure about Canada though, never been there.

Preventing anyone from not wearing something that adheres to their culture or religion violates civil rights and their beliefs. People should have the freedom to wear whatever they want.

I don't live in Canada, neither the US, but in my country the same discussion is going on.
In my opinion, people should be able to wear whatever they like, it's their own choice.
If you're annoyed by it, just look the other way.

I'm not sure if that's the case when it comes to Niqab. I've read a lot of research around this and it's entirely by their own choice and will, without any bigger influence from their men.

If this concept became a law of nature freedom of religion would cease to exist, in a Kantian sense. If it were to be implemented into U.S. law we would need to propose and accept a new amendment that nullifies our First Amendment (freedom of religion). According to Rawls, under the veil of ignorance (i.e. if you did not know your race, religion, intelligence, hair color etc...) would you want this to become a law of nature (for who knows, perhaps you would be born Islamic) would you want your religious practices suppressed? Doesn't everyone deserve the right to have their own belief-set and practices (assuming these practices do not involve self-harm or harm to others)? Just food for thought.
