Understanding hacking attempts

Before I start If this is in the wrong section please move. I posted it here because I've been seeing a lot of it in the runescape section.

Why?

You may be asking yourself why am I wasting my time making this guide? Well the answer is simple really. FOR YOUR ACCOUNT PROTECTION., and honestly people not understanding the differences between the two, is a bit of a pet peeve.

What do they do?

In the most simple terms they steal your account information. The most basic ones will steal only information to your account and most defiantly clean out your item/cash pile. More advanced ones can steal any information entered on to your computer, they can be very dangerous and to your security of not only runescape but real life things, such as credit card information, social security number, important user names, and passwords to things such as online banking, paypal, or even your email address.

The different types of hacking attempts.

• Java Drive Bys
• Keylogging
• Phishing attempts
• Phishing emails (Sub category)

Lets begin on recognizing the differences of these hacking attempts. Before we continue I will tell you this tutorial will not include any of the follow items.
• Downloads
• Links
• Emails
• Request Information

Java Drive Bys

In my opinion the most clever attempt at hacking someone. These attempts can vary from a numerous different things, from image hosting sites, to "private server" sites, to even facebook, or myspace. It's the coding in them that makes them so unique. These attempts appear to take you to a normal site such as one of them posted above and they look exactly how the site should look but they carry one extra thing that the site normally shouldnt carry with them. The java run time acceptance button.

Drive By

Regular imageshack site

As you can see the Drive By carries the java run time button to accept or decline.

How to stay safe from these?

Virus Protection
I cannot stress this enough. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have virus protection on your computer. I always recommend AVG, the free or paid version both are fantastic programs, I also use MalwareBytes as a backup. Both of these have a free version which is almost as good as their paid version. Other protections include but are not limited to Trend Micro Scan, Norton 360, MacAfee, and Kapersky. This is your biggest protection against Drive Bys.

Don't Click unknown links
If you see someone on this site who has less than 50 posts posting links, you should be concerned. Now I'm not saying EVERY person with under 50 posts will be posting a Drive By, but a lot of the time they are. Just wait until a person of more knowledge of this can check the link out before you click it.

Do not accept the Java request
"Oh no I clicked a link and it was a java drive by what do I do?" That is probably the biggest confusing with Java Drive By links. If you click one that's fine nothing will happen you have no chance of being hacked as long as you didn't accept the java request. People fail to understand that Drive Bys are just copies of the original site with some re-coding done to it. (The java request) These sites are harmless unless you enter information or accept the java request.

I stumbled upon a Drive By and clicked the link.
As stated above if you clicked the link there is a simple fix for this close the window. That's all there is to it. Now this only accounts for if you open the site see the request and close it. If you accept I'll explain what to do below.

Accepted

Okay so you read my guide, still managed to stumbled upon a Drive By and proceeded to click the accept button. You messed up big time. You're scared for you perfectly maxed turmoil pure with a 1b bank. Well Calm down nothing gets done right when you're freaking out. Take a deep breath and continue with the guide.

What happens when you click accept and what to do after you clicked it?

When accepted is clicked, aside from the site you're on doing nothing besides removing the java request, your computer begins downloading a virus. If the download pops up in the download window cancel it as fast as you can if possible. If the download has completed (if it happens where you can see it) you need to.
• Close anything accessing the internet
• Run a virus scan
• Remove the virus through the virus program
• Then change passwords

Do it in that order. Never ever change your password before removing the virus, as it will just record your new password, UNLESS you use a different computer.

If you follow the guide on Drive Bys your account should be safe. There is that 1% chance that you may still lose your account. With this guide and information I hope that none of you fall victim to Java Drive Bys.

Please stay tuned for the rest of my guide coming up.

Good guide so far, especially toward anyone who is less technologically knowledgeable. Look forward to the other part!

not bad so far, I recommend not logging in onto runescape at all, at least for a few days. They should log onto a noob account a couple of times a day and check ip everytime they log on.

It's suggested that when you know you've been hit by a drive by, or are RAT'd, to disconnect from the internet on that machine in whole. Until you get the virus removed.

MacAfee/Norton = protection?

Also, am I living in the stone age using a firewall or did you just not list it for some reason.

Most of the time virus programs won't pick up on the viruses if they are decent. This is where the main misconception that people have is, that they are completely safe as they have an anti virus program but this is simply not the case

With my anti virus programs these days firewalls are incorporated as well so that is why he probably didn't list them.

They are better than nothing, firewall was not mentioned because windows has the firewall built in and is automatically enabled unless you shut it off. But firewall is another protection method.

This is true, people are far too reliant on virus programs and they will not always be protected. With AVG though I have purposely accepted the java request to see if it was blocked or allowed and I'd say 90% of the time it protects.

There's more to come I was just exhausted last night I finished this part up at like 3am. Probably won't get to it tonight as I have work early morning but it is coming.

Good guide so far. Can't wait to see it finished up (hope you didn't forget lol). This should definitely help those newcomers to drive-bys without a doubt. A must read for those who have no experience to the dark world of the internet. :)

You should write about keyloggers as it is possible for virus protectors not to pick up a few of those keyloggers out there.

I would be hard pressed to beleive you. I know for a fact that soulsplit did not rat your account. I know the owners/have played it forever/its entirely clean. You also didn't get ratted for gold4fun unless you clicked an advertisement at the top of their page on accident that was harmful.
