Do you NEED college to have a successful life?

Just don't go with basket weaving or philosophy

I'm taking "Machine Technology" - It involves using machines to make stuff.
From mills, grinders, and lathes...
To their high tech CNC counterparts.

What Kind of stuff?

Well, I've manufactured an engine... from ugly pieces of metal!

I'm going to make a gun suppressor shortly, as well. (Same Skillset)

And don't forget the longboards...

So, what sort of pay can I get for these 2 years of college?

This is all completely subjective. What someone deems 'successful' is different to someone else's definition.

A lot of people would say successful is earning a lot of money, having a big house etc. For that, college is pretty much needed, otherwise you're gonna struggle to get all that money otherwise.

Other people would deem a successful life as a happy one. You definitely don't need college for that.

I hope to go to uni this summer or the summer after it, I'm not sure yet as I may take a year out. Whether you're going to uni/college for the degree to earn money or simply to have fun, it's usually a good choice.

 

You do realize there are jobs in the military that are useful in civilian life.. For example working at an airport refueling, driving large vehicles etc.

College is not a necessity. I for one did valenteer work to build up my resume. From that I managed to gain experience working for the police. Whilst doing this I self taught myself the insides out of Network Administration and Server Maintinance, I am due to take my MCITP exams which will cost me around £300 in total along with my network+ qualifacation. I have passed my medical to become part of GMP Special Constabulary.
I've done this leaving school at 16, with a criminal record.
I'm happy with my life and the path I've taken, and in my eyes the qualifactions I will receive can give me the potential to lead a 'successful life'.
That's my story anyway, I bet everyone has their own, it's your life, you make the choices, if you seek further advice I'd see your local conexions office of citizens advice bureau.

We are made to believe that College is a place where we will learn how to become great at whatever profession we decide to pursue. This statement is true ONLY if your at a school that gives you the opportunity to take classes with hands on training. Otherwise, you learn a bunch of bullshit you'll forget by the next semester, and 99% of the time, you'll never use any of that info in whatever job you get.

I'm a senior on College, and what I've learned is that College is all about networking. Spend your time meeting and befriending people and professors because unfortunately it's not what you know, it's who you know.

I'm not saying blow off school, definitely give it your best shot, but don't think your future depends on a 4.0. Focus on getting your name out there, get an internship if possible, and overall, work on your people skills because your ability to talk and make people like you will take you farther than any piece of paper.

 

No, you don't need to go to College to have a successful life but it certainly helps and makes it a hell of a lot easier. In the UK the only people who don't go to college are usually drop outs, criminals or for some reason incapable of attending.

My uncle makes extremely good money, he owns his own glass business and is a contractor.

Technical training helps and college will help you obtain that degree which employers look for. Why would anyone hire a non-graduate for a good job when they can hire another person with a college degree. Competition is high these days.

If you need the qualifications to get into University/a job/Apprenticeship then obviously, yes. It is still possible to get a good job without going to college though. Most work places offer an on-the-job training system meaning you can get a job there and not have any qualifications however you'll have to start at the bottom and work your way up.

 

You dont if your a genius like Mark ZUckerberg who dropped out of yale or someshit and stared facebook. But if your just a everyday incompetant american then yes you probably will need a college education to make a good living and life
