why can't i run runescape?

Alright well i'm having problems running runescape, it lags so bad that there's no way i can possibly play it. Also i just upgraded my internet so my internet starts out at 105mbps, then the second i actually open an internet window it goes down to 5.5mbps.... anyone know why?

here's some information about the computer i'm trying to play on, if you can tell me what's wrong i would be so happy lol

Microsoft windows xp professional
platinum 4 cpu 1.70 GHz
1.69GHz 512 MB of RAM

Does it lag when you play other online games? Try fiddling around with the graphics settings in game (Direct X, safe mode, whatnot) and see what happens.

If it turns out to be just RuneScape causing these issues and fiddling with the settings or downloading the client doesn't help, try posting in the technical support subsection of the RuneScape forums.

 

Have you upgraded java? Playing in the lowest details helps too

 

Same here mine runs for about 5 minutes then auto logs me out. Its like a battle with rs everyday

 

Your computer is pretty dated. The Internet connection is well more than enough, but your CPU and RAM are lacking pretty badly. Like Root beerpk3 said, updating Java and playing in the bare minimum settings might work.

You can partially make up for the hardware issues by opening Runescape and then going to your Task Manager. Then find the "java .exe" process, right click it, and set the priority to High. However, that computer is so dated that I don't think this would even help. Runescape's minimum requirements are 1 GHz CPU and 512 MB of RAM available. Since your computer takes up some of these on its own, you're not leaving much left for Runescape.


Btw - now that I've seen your computer's specs, myapologizes for closing your thread. It's funny your Internet is so fast but your computer is so old, and I honestly didn't expect someone with such an expensive Internet connection would have issues with Runescape.

 

My dad had to upgrade out internet for work and he just used it today. The only reason i thought it might be the internet is just everything is horribly slow, even facebook takes me time to load. I would have just figured it was the computer but my mom seems to have the same problem with hers. I have dumbed down all the settings on runescapes graphics. Does anyone think direct x or open gl would help? if so how would i set it up? Just click on the button? I tried that and it didn't seem to workk. Anyways thanks a ton for the help guys sorry this is just a wall of text

 

OpenGL and DirectX generally takes more power than the basic software setting, and using DirectX requires downloading a plugin. If its having problems on software mode, then I'm willing to bet its not a connection speed.

How does the lag behave? Does it take a long time to respond to clicks (but is otherwise smooth) or do you have regular skips?

Edit: Also what antivirus are you running?

 

It's just an all around lag, clicks delay, sometimes don't even register. I basically skip when i run. Simple tasks such as using the g.e, switching equipment, take a ton of time.

I do have one more question, i have heard of "external" hard drives, would it be a good idea to invest in one of those? Also i hear you can buy better video cards? If so can they be installed on an old computer like mine? I am going to be using this computer for more than just runescape so i feel the added memory would be a necesity annyways. Thanks again for the detailed response.

About your hardware: I don't think you'll be able to upgrade that computer anymore, at least with new hardware. Each chip has to match a slot in your computer's motherboard, and most of these socket types change every 3-4 years. Based on your computer's specs, I'd bet that it has a dated motherboard as well. Your best bet would be to buy a new PC, or at least one 2-3 years old on Craigslist. Buying an external hard drive won't solve your problem; it's an irrelevant piece of hardware for your issue.

About the antivirus: your massive drop in Internet speed that happens when you load a browser is worrisome. Normally a bad antivirus can do this, but Norton isn't that bad. I suggest updating it to be sure that it's not the issue. Also, I really suggest downloading either Firefox or Google Chrome. Internet Explorer can be pretty mucked up with add-ons and stuff.


Note - It's also very possible you have a virus attached to your Internet connection. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and do a sweep. (Do it even with Norton's scans coming clean, trust me.)
