(Check out my UE Application here!)

    Introduction

Welcome to my 4th guide. This guide will teach you how too create A 3D Eyeball using Blender.

Don't know what Blender is? Check out my Guide explaining it here.

    I: Introduction

    II: Contents

    III: Getting Started

    IV: Adding in the Iris

    V: Finishing Off

    Getting Started

Select the cube by pressing "B" on the keyboard, and dragging a box around the Cube. Press "Delete" on the keyboard, then with the mouse click "Erase Selected Object (S)"

Add in "UVSphere." To do this press "Spacebar" Then Add --> Mesh --> UVSphere.

    Go into front View Mode(NUMPAD1)

Press "R" on the keyboard, then "X" then enter 90. This should rotate it so it is easier too edit in Edit Mode.

Go into Edit mode. (Press "Tab" on the keyboard)

Press the "Occlude Background Geometry" button. This is located on the right of toolbar underneath the Graphics area. It is a picture of A cube.

Now, press "A", then "B" twice. This will open circle select. Using your Mouse wheel button, hightlight the part of the eye you want to be your iris.(The iris is the area of colour in your eye, usually brown, blue, black or hazel.)

    Adding in an Iris

Next, split your 3D Window into 2 seperate screens. (This can be done by moving your cursor too the top toolbar, Right clicking it, then clicking "Split Area.")

Change the 2nd Window into a UV Image Editor. (By clicking the Button on the bottom left hand corner of your new window, and selecting UV Image Editor.)

Now save the iris image (Found Here) and go back to blender, and you should have the area the the iris will be selected.

With the mouse over the 3d window, press "U"(Must be in edit mode)and then click unwrap.

Now that area should be “unwrapped” in the uvimage editor(The are that you highlighted will now be there.)

In the uvimage window, click image --> Open, and find where you saved the image of the blue iris.

OK, now the uvimage window should have your eye and a Highlighted. The circle will have turned into an oval, which of course is not the right shape for an Iris. To fix this, press "A" until all of the circles vertices are selected. Then press "S", then "X" and move the mouse closer to the circle until it turns into A circle.

Now use "S" to scale and "G" to move the vertices until the yellow shape is perfectly around the Iris.

Press F12. This will Render your image. The Iris will not be on there yet, and it is OK that the eyeball blocky.

To put the iris on the render, close the render window, select the eyeball, go into edit mode, make sure the iris’s vertices are ALL selected, Then, add two new materials (See the Below Image). Select the second material, then open the shading menu. (The Sphere Image)

Under the 'Material' heading, click the button which is labelled "Tex Face"

Now go back to the edit menu(Click F9). Make sure you are in edit mode with the iris’s vertices selected, then click the “Assign” which is below the “Select” and “Deselect” buttons on the “Links and Materials” window. Render your Model (F12 Remember) and your iris is there.

    Finishing up

There may be a few small issues with your eyeball.

    1. The lamp is in the wrong area. You can fix this by going into "Object Mode" (TAB) Right clicking the lamp, and Dragging it to a good postion near the eyeball.

    2. The eye will still seem very blocky. To fix this, go into object mode (TAB), then press the “set smooth” button on the links and materials heading.

This is a very nice guide. I personally have never used Blender, but this preview excites me for your Blender Guide. You'd do well as a UE and I'd love to see you get the rank.
