How do you choose who to sit next to on public transport?

I've only been on public transport once and I sat with friends, but I'm assuming I would normally just sit any where unless I thought the person looked threatening or wanted to talk, then I would stand.

 

If a Window seat is free then there.
Then I look for the most legroom, and choose that seat.
If all the seats have the same legroom, then next to someone smaller than me, so I have enough room.

 

I always conflict with the norm, I love to sit next to someone on the train even when there is open spots. Just makes them uncomfortable.

I take the bus everywhere I go and I only sit when there is a good amount of free open seats. If there is a only a few open than I choose to stand as I feel they're people who could use the seats more then me. I also avoid sitting with people who I know that are going to try to talk to me as it is extremly awkward. Sadly I also consider the overweight factor as sitting where you're pratically out on the aisle is annoying.

I look for an empty area - possible in non-rush hour times.

When all empty seats are seated beside someone, I'll stand; if not I try not to sit beside someone that would make me the least uncomfortable.

People I avoid are smelly (smoke/sweat/food), overweight to the point of being on my seat also, fidgeting crazily etc.

 

Someone who does not seem awkard.

 

Well for me I dont really care, If I find an empty seat. But the funny thing is that two months ago when I was in a bus a dude fell asleep on me and literally I said wtf. Just then I stood up the whole time because all seats taken and the sleepy head just slept on two seats

 

I haven't taken public transport since high school years ago and we kinda had our own seats on the bus because we were the oldest but before then I would chose the quietest looking kid to sit next to. I met my best friend this way =p.

 

I'm usually on the bus with friends, if not, I try to keep to myself. I'm a relatively shy guy.

I don't think about this too much. I just want as much space away from other people lol

 

Public transportation is very packed where I love, so I generally just pick any open seat. If by some chance I do have to pick a seat next to someone, I try to pick the least shady-looking person
