Everyone who is a psychologist says people do anything they do to fill a void. It's overused and a bullshit excuse in my opinion.

In what way are the rushes equivalent? In shoplifting, you're taking something you haven't paid for. The rush is the part where you're actually stealing and getting away with it. In gambling, you're not stealing anything. You're winning money, not stealing money. There may be a 'rush' while winning money, but it certainly won't be the same 'rush' as when stealing money.

Both feel good when winning money, perhaps that's not what makes them feel good.

You're not 'winning' money when you shoplift, like you are in gambling. You're stealing it. Therefore the 'rush' feeling is not the same. Therefore they cannot be considered equivalent.

Honestly I think that in some cases they actually want to get caught; for the attention.

If they don't want to shoplift they can help themselves, and stay away

This has probably been posted but the medical term is cleptomania and it is a real thing, I'd say it's closely related to OCD but im not a doctor.

I got the same problem, except its with restaurants. Id usually just take glasses, ive got a collection of miscellaneous beer glasses, but it's not limited to glasses, silverware, plates, sugar packets, and pens. I find it fun and exciting, I never skip out on paying and tipping.

He should stop ASAP. It's an extremely bad addiction if you like free things/and you are sneaky. That's bad. I feel bad for your friend.
