I'm not sure how much time you are willing to spend to find a name you really like. I personally did a huge grave dig through 3 years but eventually bought a multi spaced name.

Last active 09-11-2011 so you have a chance that he will reply to a PM. He got the account with the name for free so there's a big chance you can buy it for a low price. However, there is another big chance that he didn't play on the account and that the name became available to take with the name changing update. It's worth a try though.
