Why using a calculator is bad

Hey, I have yet another research paper due tomorrow.

My thesis is, "21st Century students should not use calculators because it is having a negative impact on their math skills"

I need some examples to give and some other reasons as well.

Please try to help me as much as you can,

    Thanks.

Why using a calculator is bad

Not sure if you still need this but, our teacher always yells EXACTLY the same thing lol.

    A few reasons:

    - If you can't do maths with numbers without a calculator then doing maths with letters is doomed to fail.
    - If you can't do maths with letters, then you can't do equations
    - If a situation differs from a normal situation, they can't figure it out.

Sorry if i'm being a bit vague, i'm not english =P

I'm not sure about where you live but in New Zealand there is a Graphs achievement standard and another standard (can't remember) in the NCEA school system which you can literally get merit on (second highest mark) from using the calculator, no math involved.

Also one of my teachers referred to the calculator as 'the root of all evil'

Why using a calculator is bad

A calculator shouldn't be used for elementary maths. Any form of division, multiplication, addition, subtraction should not require a calculator other than to speed things up. Furthering that, simultaneous equations, rearranging etc don't need a calculator either.

However, when you get to the advanced stages of maths, I think a calculator is perfectly acceptable. Try doing trig with pen and paper. Yes, it's possible (If you've learnt it), but it's much easier to simply use a calculator.

I personally for myself, with the aforementioned don't use calculators at all. It's not necessary to type in what 23 x 19 is, just think for 3 seconds.

He's writing an essay against it though, not discussing the value of a calculator.
Obviously, a calculator is a very useful tool. God, try to go through Calculus without one...

Anyways, with an essay sometimes you argue against what you actually believe.

I would suggest outlining your essay into a simple three sections. (because of the topic, you're obviously not looking to write a quality college essay.)

good ideas might include the element of practice, or lack there of when raised using a calculator. The ability to "cheat" and use a function on a calculator rather than actually being able to do it. When a real life or higher difficulty question comes up that you need to reason, you'll be screwed if you don't have fundamental knowledge. You might want to refer to programs that do the quadratic formula for you.

That's just what came to mind.

You need to know that It's bad to use calculator for elementray stage students. For advanced math, u cant do it without cauculator.

The bad impact of using calculator is it's hinder you from expanding you own way of thoughts. thus you brain can't be developed fully leading to the lack in intellegence.

You best shot is to involve this 2 fields. To begin with, the bad influence of using calculator for elementray stage students. In addtion, you should elaborate what competence/skills for our future development.
