Not really a trick question.

Many diseases, even though they sound as if they were plural, are actually singular because they refer to only one kind of disease.

Like: mumps, rickets, or pox.

 

again, you would have to have some knowledge of that word in order to get the correct answer. It is simply a subject-verb agreement, the easiest error to fix/notice, but in this case, the trick wasn't the answer, but the subject itself. Based upon thinking, everyone got it right because it was assumed to be plural, hence, it would be "are".

 

No, you would need knowledge of the exceptions. subject-verb is easy to fix, but hard to notice because there are so many exceptions.

Grammar would be a piece of cake if it was based upon thinking, it isn't however. Sure there are rules you must to follow, but alot of it is knowledge based. Either you know it, or you don't.

I disagree with "Lovers' kiss".
If the sentence was "Lovers kiss", "Lovers" would be the subject and "kiss" would be the verb. It would be a correct sentence.
However, the sentence was "Lovers' kiss", meaning that it is talking about a 'kiss of lovers' (lovers is possessive because of the apostrophe). Therefore, it is not a sentence, as there is no verb.

Another correction: OED says measles is "used with a singular or plural verb", so everyone got that right.
