SOPA What Is It? Basically A Legislation To Shut Down The Internet

What I meant by shutting down the internet I meant basically almost everything.

Facebook would be shutdown

Youtube would be shutdown

Even Sythe could be shutdown. Why?

This Legislation censors (DNS Block) ANY site that has copyrighted material on it.

etc.. etc..

This is even more dangerous because old people who don't even know how to use a KEYBOARD are debating this....

The new version of the bill does not apply to any websites that are operated within the US so none of your examples would be affected.

 

I haven't read the whole bill or even read a ton about it, but from what I understand, it would block certain domain name servers from calling certain sites. Is there a reason you couldn't get around that by just typing in the IP instead?

This is true but you first have to get the IP and the bill also requires search engines to de-list the sites which means they will be hard to find. It is blatant censorship and that scares me.

That's bs tbh. America can't fight worldwide connections. It just won't work.

People will just start using offshore hosting etc.

 

Offshore hosting doesn't work if they just block US people from connecting to them.

 

People will get VPNs and stuff.

There's no real way to block... unless they fully take internet access from you.

Or instead of a blacklist, they make a whitelist, but that be extreme measurement.

 

Of course people will be able to find a way around the blocks but most people would not have the technical skills to do so. But regardless, it is a stupid system that allows tons of people to get by it very easily, to be honest.

Youtube won't be shut down. No one in the government is that stupid and Google would just refuse to do so and ignore whoever is telling them to do it.

 

I've been doing a lot of researching on SOPA and I'm not REALLY against it. I mean, it sucks, I torrent more than the average person and would hate to lose that... but on the flipside... I'd hate to be the person who makes something really badass and expect a lot of money from it... then have it flop over a copyright issue.

It's actually not too hard. The government here has a lot of power, all they have to do is issue a cease and desist to ISPs, and prevent outgoing connections.

Not to mention, other countries cooperate with our government when it comes to copyright laws usually... Why? Because they want to remain friendly. It makes sense.

All in all, there's a better solution than SOPA. Instead of fighting piracy, they need to invest in it. If you can't beat em, join em, kinda solution. Find a way to work together... Hell, youtube makes hella money off copyrighted content... lol. It's called advertisements. The copyrighted material isn't worth so much anymore... sell the tangible objects. Make the actors smoke camels, or drink pepsi's and shit like that... Subliminal advertising allows for an increase in productivity. Commissions people, that's where the REAL money lies!

 

That's been my opinion for awhile. The system is broken and because information flows so easily now, copyright holders have no choice but to change their business models. Their stuff is overpriced and their monopoly is coming crashing down around them because they have overpriced their stuff for too long. They need to embrace piracy and redo their model so that it works, like Steam has done. Let Netflix stream your content and you will stop losing so much. Partner with Youtube and just put commercials on the movies and make your money that way. You won't be making as much but it will be better than nothing.

The U.S. isn't a free country. You have certain freedoms, yes, but that certainly does not make it a free country. The internet is still in uncharted waters while legalization over a majority of it is being discussed. Pirates roam these waters, and the government is looking for a way to police them.

Think of it this way, SOPA is to the internet as metal detectors are to stores. They're trying to find a way to stop you from stealing. The only problem is, they're a little too late. The issue they face isn't whether or not they have the right intentions, it's that they're imposing force in a situation that they've been vacant from for far too long. Because of this, they either need to find a common ground, or allow social media to take over... Which, by the way, is a bad thing.
