    1) Introduction
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    What is a Range Tank?
    Well, a Range Tank is an unique type of Runescape Character Build.
    This type of character is very well-rounded, effective in both PvP and PvM.
    It offers an extremely high Defence level for his combat, thus regarding it as a "Tank".
    It's main form of attack is Range, and Magic will be used as a supportive skill.
    The MAX level of Attack and Strength should be kept at 70 respectively.
    A Maxed 99 Defence and 99 Prayer Range Tank will be considered as Range-Based only IF the Attack and Strength levels add up to LESS than 149.
    Making good use of the Runescape's Combat Level System, a Range Tank maxes out at the following Combat Levels :
    (Attack and Strength levels will not be stated as the max of those should be kept at Level 70 each.)
    Keep in mind, "Maxed" refers to 99 Range/Magic/Constitution and Summoning as it does not affect Combat Level in PvP.
    A Maxed 70 Defence Range Tank with 70 Prayer -- 99 + 12 Combat.
    A Maxed 70 Defence Range Tank with 99 Prayer -- 102 + 12 Combat.
    A Maxed 99 Defence Range Tank with 70 Prayer -- 106 + 12 Combat.
    A Maxed 99 Defence Range Tank with 99 Prayer -- 109 + 13 Combat.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    2) Quests / Non Combat Skill Training Outline
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Now that you have an idea of what a Range Tank is, it's time to prepare yourself into making one.
    In this section, I will list all of the more important and "required" quests into maximizing your Range Tank's advantages/potential.
    In both Player Killing and Boss Hunting.
    There is a large amount of quests so please bear with me and I'll try to be as organized as possible.
    The required Non-Combat Levels for the quests are :
    Slayer : 18
    Crafting : 61
    Thieving : 53
    Woodcutting : 55
    Hunter : 61
    Firemaking : 61
    Mining : 60
    Smithing : 50
    Fishing : 53
    Farming : 17
    Cooking : 70
    Fletching : 10
    Agility : 50
    Herblore : 45
    ~~~~~~

    Item & Quests :

    Ava's Accumulator

    This item is a MUST for Rangers in general. It saves you a lot of money and time by saving your arrows and without having to pick them up.

    Required Quests :

    The Restless Ghost, Ernest the Chicken, Priest in Peril.

    --------------

    Handcannon

    This item is recommended as it is a very good weapon to PK with, while offering a good special attack.
    I would refer this to the "Godsword of Range".
    The only down side is the chance of exploding.

    Required Quests :

    Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf, Between a Rock, Forgettable Tale of a Drunken Dwarf, The Giant Dwarf, Fishing Contest, Dwarf Cannon.

    --------------

    Ancient Magicks

    Ancient magicks, access to powerful spells such as the Blood and Ice spells.

    Required Quests :

    The Digsite, The Tourist Trap, The Temple of Ikov, Waterfall Quest, Troll Stronghold, Death Plateau

    --------------

    Prayer Books

    This is a requirement for Recipe For Disaster.
    It's recommended to finish this quest early as the Zamorak Prayer Book provides the best Range Attack Bonus in the Shield Slot.

    Required Quests :

    Horror From the Deep

    --------------

    Lunar Magics

    Offers a new Lunar Spellbook.
    Very useful spells included, such as the NPC Contact spell which is very helpful in Slayer.
    And ofcourse, the infamous Vengeance spell.
    Your Range Tank will be incomplete without it.

    Required Quests :

    Lunar Diplomacy, The Fremmenik Trials, Lost City, Rune Mysteries, Shilo Village, Jungle Potion.

    --------------

    Extension to Lunar Magics

    Well, you have already gotten Lunar Magics anyway, might as well get the full spellbook by finishing the following quests!

    Required Quests :

    Dream Mentor, Edgar's Ruse, Druidic Ritual

    --------------

    Barrows Gloves

    Definately the most important quest reward out there.
    This is another item that you MUST get for your Range Tank.

    Required Quests :

    Recipe For Disaster, Cooks Assistant, Fishing Contest, Goblin Diplomacy, Big Chompy Bird Hunting, Biohazard, Demon Slayer,
    Murder Mystery, Nature Spirit, Priest in Peril, Restless Ghost, Witch's House, Gertrude's Cat, Shadow of the Storm,
    Legend's Quest (Started), Monkey Madness, The Golem, Plague City, Underground Pass, Hero's Quest, Family Crest,
    Shield of Arrav, Merlin's Crystal, Dragon Slayer, The Grand Tree, Tree Gnome Village

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Phew! That's a lot of questing isn't it?
    But keep this in mind, the reward ahead of you is very convincing.
    Set yourself some goals and you will reach them in no time!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3) The Real Training
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Here comes the real deal.... Training!
    At this stage, you would have either trained most of the Non Combat Skills to the advised levels above for starting money, or you have transfered a big sum of money over to your Starter Range Tank.
    Level 1 to 20 Range Training.
    Very basic things at this point.
    From level 1 to 20 I would recommend training at cows for fast experience and a reliable income to fund the ammunition.
    Train with Iron Knives.
    Level 1 to 20 Defence Training.
    I suggest raising your defence level in the early stage as it helps a lot when you do not use as much food.
    Less damage taken = Less food eaten = Less banking for food = Faster experience = Less money wasted.
    Stay at cows. They are amazing for low levels and their hides are good money.
    I love cows.
    Level 20 to 70 Range Training.
    This is where things start to get interesting!
    I am DISGUSTED at the amount of people training their Range and Combat in general at ROCK CRABS.
    Kingsley : Give me some reasons that ROCK CRABS are good for training.
    Student : Err... High HP...Low Damage...Fast Spawns...
    Kingsley : And...?!
    Student : What else is there?
    Kingsley : Exactly.
    Rock crabs are NOT that good for training.
    What you really ought to be doing is training Range through the Slayer skill.
    Collect all the charms you receive while Slaying.
    Head over to Burthope and receive a task from Turael.
    He is the easiest slayer master and the monsters are more than suitable for you to train on.
    Level 20 to 40 Defence Training.
    Time to raise your Defence Level a bit for the Runite Armour.
    Achieving 40 Defence will grant you better defensive bonuses to make your training a lot more efficient.
    If you are bored from the Slayer, for the 20 Defence Levels, head over to the Fremmenik Slayer Dungeon.
    Bring yourself loads of Antipoison Potions and kill Cave Crawlers.
    These monsters are rumoured to be the highest Effigy droppers per hour.
    They also drop a lot of herbs. Multiple herbs frequently.
    Level 1 to 70 Magic Training.
    At this stage, you have yourself a very decently made "Starter Range Tank".
    Let's bring some variety in at this point.
    It is time to raise your Magic Level so you can complete some more quests in between training.
    It is common sense that before any Magic training, you should finish Imp Catcher and Witch's Potion for some free Magic levels first.
    If you havn't done that, do it.
    You should have around 11 Magic by the time it's finished.
    Now go buy yourself some body, earth and water runes.
    Weaken/Curse dummies in Lumbridge until you have reached 25 Magic.
    If you have a lot of money transfered from your main, do the highest level teleport from now on until 55 Magic.
    If not, continue with curses as it's still nearly 25k experience per hour.
    At 55 Magic, you will start alching.
    Check the current Grand Exchange prices and compare it with the Alch price.
    Be sure to include the cost of Nature Runes unless you are Runecrafting them yourselves.
    Once you found yourself an item, alch your way to 70 Magic.
    Level 70 to 85 Range Training.
    Congratulations on 70 Magic!
    Take a look at your stats and quests then you would have found a very well built Junior Tank.
    It is now time to proceed to higher stats!
    Guess what?
    Yes.
    More Slayer training =].
    Personally, I never got bored of Slayer as it always gives me a new place to go and change the scenario a little bit.
    Keep saving all the charms you are getting.
    Level ? to 52 Prayer Training.
    Depending on the amount of quests you have been doing, your Prayer level will be different.
    After achieving 85 Range, it is now time to raise your Prayer level to 52.
    Prayer is very useful and it is going to help a lot with your questing.
    Purchase Dragon Bones and head over to a House Party Theme World.
    Make your way to Yanille and use your bones on the open altars that other players offer there.
    Level 40 to 70 Defence Training.
    It is now time to train your defence even higher!
    After this step, you will have access to Barrows Armour!
    Providing even higher Defensive stats to enhance your tanking.
    As I am a Slayer lover, I would definately recommend you to proceed training with Slayer.
    If you are sick of slayer by this time, head over to Soul Wars and enojy some Safe PvPing to check your progress of your Range Tank while getting Zeals for Defence Experience.
    Level 85 to 99 Range Training.
    Now it's time for the BIG MONEY MAKER!
    From 85 to 99 Range, I personally camp Aviansies for their Adamant Bars and the amazing Range experience per hour.
    At this stage, you should have finished all of the recommended quests and achieved Barrows Gloves and other items.
    Here is your Set-Up for Aviansies Training.
    Helmet : Armadyl Helmet
    Amulet : Fury / Glory
    Cape : Ava's Accumulator
    Weapon : Rune Crossbow
    Ammunition : Broad Bolts
    Body : Saradomin D'hide Body
    Legs : Torag's Platelegs
    Boots : Dragon Boots
    Gloves : Barrows Gloves
    Shield : Zamorak Prayer Book (Unholy Book)
    For the inventory :
    2 More Torag's Platelegs as yours will degrade after approximately 1.4k kills.
    Varrock Teleport.
    At least 1k Bones to Peaches Tabs.
    Rope (As this is your first time entering the God Wars Dungeon).
    Mithril Grappel.
    10K Fire Runes.
    2K Nature Runes.
    Fill the rest of the slots with Sharks/Lobsters.
    Head over to the Armadyl Area of the Dungeon.
    Cross the Mithril Grappel place.
    Right after you cross it, head towards the spot indicated in the picture below.
    To the right is the spawn point of a Level 73 Aviansie.
    To the left is the spawn point of a Level 79 Aviansie.
    Pick up all the Adamant Bars and all of the Runes and Coins.
    Cast High Alchemy on all the Rune Dagger and Runite Limb drops.
    You are now set for 99 Range.
    Level 52 to 70 Prayer Training.
    Why 70 Prayer if you may ask.
    70 is a nice number to have for a stat and it greatly boosts the amount of time you may use Prayers.
    With 70 Defence, 70 Prayer and 99 Range, you can now join some Armadyl Godwars teams.
    Buy some Dragon Bones or Frost Bones as you may have a lot of money since the 99 Range at Aviansies.
    Head back to the House Party World, Yanille.
    Use bones on altar until 70 Prayer.
    Level 70 to 94 Magic Training.
    There are many different ways to do this, depending on your bank.
    If you can manage though, I would definately recommend Ice Bursting Rock Lobsters.
    Ice Bursting Rock Lobsters will provide you with A LOT of Crimson Charms.
    Which are very useful in training Summoning.
    If you do not quite have the bank for that, I suggest you go back to High Alching.
    If you are bored of Alching, head over to Soul Wars again.
    Own everyone in there with your 99 Range.
    Have fun, kill lots of people while gaining Zeals for Magic Experience.
    Level 70 to 99 Defence Training.
    This is going to be the hardest part of all your training yet.
    With a cap of 70 Attack and 70 Strength, training Defence is going to be a bit slower.
    It is still recommended though, that you train your Defence with Pure Melee, rather than training it through Defensive Range.
    For this part I would once again recommend you to go back to slayer.
    With 70 Attack and 70 Strenght you would be able to rack up decent experience per hour.
    Using NPC Contact via Lunar Magic will help greatly towards receiving tasks.
    Use the Shilo Village Slayer Master at this point.
    He will hand out a lot of tasks like Hellhounds, Daggonoths, Abyssal Spectres and others.
    Which are pretty good experience to train Defence on.
    Take regular breaks from training.
    Have some fun, Player Kill a bit.
    Perhaps going to Godwars a bit.
    Set yourself some goals and you will achieve it in no time.
    Level 94 to 99 Magic Training.
    Maxing out.
    You are now 99 Defence and 99 Range.
    If you have been following this guide correctly, you are also rather close to 99 HP as well.
    From 94 to 99 Magic, Ice Burst Rock Lobsters.
    You should've made bank from Slaying 70 to 99 Defence, as well as some Boss Hunting in between.
    Spending 40M on Magic is nothing to you at this stage.
    During your journey to 99 Magic Ice Bursting, you will acquire even more charms and gain your third 99 in the Constitution skill.
    Enough said.
    Get Training!
    Level 70 to 99 Prayer Training. (Optional)
    Why 99 Prayer now? I thought 70 was enough?
    Well, you are now currently Level 106 Combat with Four 99 Skills.
    Achieving 99 Prayer will only give you 3 more Combat Levels.
    If you do deceide to carry on and get 99 prayer, it is advised to do The Temple of Sentisten.
    You will gain access to the Ancient Prayers.
    Soul Split is VERY useful in Boss Hunting, as well as Pking.
    It is your choice whether to carry on or not.
    Level 3 to ? Summoning Training.
    After all that Charm collecting, you would have a bunch of them stocked up in the bank.
    Now it is the time to carry on.
    Finish Wolf Whistle, granting you Level 3 Summoning, as well as access to the skill.
    Start with using all of your Gold Charms.
    Continue with your Green Charms.
    Then to your Crimson Charms.
    Finally to your Blue Charms.
    Always make the highest level thing you can.
    You should be able to advance to Level 88 Summoning at least, giving you access to the Unicorn Stallion.
    It is a great healing familiar which is once again, very useful in God Wars and PvP.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Now all of that hardcore training is completed, it is time to move on.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    4) Money Making
    ~~~~~~~~~~

    After achieving all those amazing stats, you will most likely be placing your eyes on some of those rare and high level items.

    In this section, I will show you some of the possible ways to achieve your goals.

    Armadyl Godwars

    This is the most popular method for Range Tanks to make money out of.

    At least 90+ Range is recommended and 85+ Defence will grant you a longer stay.
    69+ Summoning will also help lengthening your trip.

    Wear your best gear, bring a War Tortoise familiar.
    Store Saradomin Brews and Super Restores as well as 2 Fruit Bat Pouches and 1K Fruit Fall Scrolls.

    Wearing your best gear, your inventory should include the following.

    Saradomin Brews and Super Restores at the Ratio of 3:1.
    Mithril Grappel Equipped.
    Broad, Diamond (e), Ruby (e) Bolts in your inventory.
    Varrock Teleport.

    Frost Dragons

    This method requires 85 Dungeoneering.
    Dungeoneering is a good Non-Combat Skill that you might want to train up.
    The Chaotic Crossbow is a very useful addition to your usual set-up.

    This method can rack up a whopping 1.5m-2m+ an hour.

    Corporal Beast

    Great way to gain Loot Share Percentage (LSP) for your Armadyl God Wars Trips.

    In my opinion, the Corporal Beast isn't a very good money maker.
    It requires a lot of luck and you will most likely lose money from supplies to even have the patience for staying there for something good.
    You can try your luck here from time to time.

    These are just a couple of the more popular methods.
    You may always find some better ones!
    So be on the lookout and snap at the best opputunities you can.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    5) PvP and Staking
    ~~~~~~~~~~~

    I am sure that this is the part most of you have been looking for!
    How good exactly is a Tank in PvP?

    Well... Maxing out at 106 Combat without 99 Prayer, you will mostly be facing Mains and Turmoil Zerkers.
    The Mains will have pretty average stats with Strength in the Low 90's.
    Attack and Defence at Low-Mid 80's.

    The Turmoil Zerkers will have obviously 95 Prayer and 45 Defence.
    Strength in the High 90's with some at 99 depending on their Attack level.

    If you run around the wild, you will see all of the Mid-High 90 Combat Level Tanks asking Mains or Meleers in general, that are greater levels than they are, for fights.
    Most of the time, the Meleers refuses the fight.
    That case alone explains a lot as to how much Tanks are feared.

    High Defence, Great Damage.
    It is the Best All Round Unique Character Build out there.

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Tank Pking can be very simple.
    To be good at Pking as a Tank, all you need to know is when to cast the Vengeance Spell.
    Your basic Pking gear is as followed :
    Helm : Rune Full Helmet
    Amulet : Glory
    Ammunition : Dragon Bolts (e)
    Body : Black D'hide Body
    Boots : Rune Boots
    Gloves : Barrows Gloves
    Legs : Rune Platelegs
    Shield : Rune Kiteshield
    Cape : Ava's Accumulator
    Ring : Ring of Recoil
    Or you can mix it up a bit with some different styles.
    The style that I personally use often is this.
    Dragon Darts to Mid/Low Hp.
    Switch to Morrigan's Javelins and Special.
    Switch to Rune Crossbow and keep attacking.
    Repeat.
    There is no limit to Pking.
    Find a way that you like and believe you can handle it at the best.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Staking
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    For a Tank, staking will also be a great income.

    I will list the best staking style for Tanks below.

    Boxing

    This is purely based on luck.
    Your Tank was not made for staking.
    But due the the High Defence Level and your Mediocre Attack and Strength, you may have a decent chance at winning.

    Range Staking

    Very simple.
    If Special Attack is on, be sure to stock up on Morrigan's Javelins.
    Morrigan's Javelins are the best thing for staking.
    It's special poisons your opponent VERY rapidly losing 50LP every second.
    Use the specials, then switch to Rune Crossbow with Dragon Bolts (e) to finish.

    If Special Attack is off, simple use Rune Crossbow and Dragon Bolts (e).
    Bring in some variation though.
    In some cases when your losing and not hitting much, you can switch over to Rune Knives (P++) and get some rapid hits in as well as poisoning your opponent.

    Mage Boxing

    Very Popular Way of Staking for a Tank.
    99 Defence, 99 Magic.
    You have all the stats required to win hundreds of millions.
    Practice with your friend before going into the real thing.
    Mix up the spells a little bit. Take advantage of the delay of the spells such as Ice Blitz.
    Do not Ice Barrage on first hit then spamming Blood Barrage.
    Learn to know when healing spells are needed.
    You will be losing out on damage if you kept casting Blood Barrage while your opponent is splashing on you every other hit.

    Staking Meleers

    Staking Meleers require luck and skill combined.
    You need to adjust your style according to the rules set.

    Keep in mind.
    NEVER USE A SPECIAL ATTACK AT THE START OF THE DUEL.
    This is a BIG No No for Tank Rangers Staking against a Meleer.

    All of the Range weapons with a killer special has a very very slow speed.
    Lets say you did 2 Handcannon Specials at the start of the Duel.
    When you are done with the special, switching over to another weapon will grant your opponent 1-2 FREE hits.

    Avoid using Specials at the start of the match.

    Let's say it's a No Armour, Special On, One Handed Weapon Only Fight against a Meleer.
    I would firstly use Rune Knives (P++) and hit them 2-4 times before switching over to a special weapon.
    99 Range rips through armour, it owns even more against someone without armour.
    You should always aim to be able to KO your opponent once you switched over to your special weapon.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    That Concludes the PvP and Staking Section.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    I applaud you if you indeed write this.

    If not, you do not deserve any respect.

    But staying on-topic, most maxed Range tanks max their Attack and Strength levels at 75.

    This not only provides an easier and quicker way of training Defence, but it also enables the person to use a Staff of Light which I consider a very useful item when using Magic.

    Leveling your Attack and Strength level from 70 to 75 does not gain you any combat levels.

    But nonetheless, I enjoyed reading this as I have a Range tank myself.

    Thanks.

    About the staking thing i prefer specing at start from distance so they are still in their fake (Low defence) gear so you hit higher, when they can spec you you will be in your real gear already.

    This is a good guide.

    Only question I had:

    Why do Range Tanks need barrow Gloves if they won't be using melee since range + venge is enough?

    Barrow Gloves only gives +1 Range Bonus so why make the effort for just a +1 range bonus?

    The only bad quality about Black Vambs is the -10 Magic which would affect the Vengeance Spell? It shouldn't effect the spell too much though so why not just use Black Vambs?
