Should assisted suicide be legal?

Should there be some kind of government regulated facility where one can go to painlessly commit suicide?

We've all heard the arguments to why one shouldn't commit suicide, but what if after all that, the person still believes it is the best viable solution. Surely it would be better for someone to go to an official suicide assistance office and get a kind of lethal injection or something of the sort, instead of resulting to try and do it by yourself (ie. Trying to shoot yourself in the head, and failing: leaving yourself alive but unable to function)...

What are your thoughts and opinions?

You're arguing two things right now... kind of confusing.

You're saying it should be legal, but it's a bad thing because it influences someone to commit suicide.

Yes. If someone is terminally ill they should have the choice to commit suicide to escape the pain of dying by their disease.

Now im conflicted when it comes to someone who is depressed. As someone who has tried suicide due to depression (Bipolar + other issues) and failing im probably not the best to discuss such an issue however ill give it a shot.

Most who survive an attempted suicide say they are grateful that they did not succeed however i can honestly say i am not. As i still struggle with this issue i cannot really say if its a good thing or not, but i am curious as to what others think.

 

If it were to be Government regulated, I do support it however there would need to be critical evaluation done for all people requesting it:

This would solve the euthanasia issue.
However, this may allow youth or others to commit suicide for petty things.

As such, I do support it, but would require measures put in place to be sure that they are 100% for their decision to end their life.

 

I would support this with either a government regulated reason like terminal and in pain or a 6 month waiting period if the above is not met.

 

Yes for people who are suffering. No for people who are just stressed out.

i do support this idea but there would have to be like a mandatory 14+ day evaluation/treatment to try to help the person with whatever is wrong with him/her first. i had a friend in high school hang herself because other girls were jealous of how popular she was and started a lot of rumors and harassed her everyday and i think if she would have had some professional help then maybe she would still be here today.

 

What if the person had a known history of multiple self acting suicide attempts... was in fact dealing with depression due to mental illness such as bipolar/anxiety/clinical depression/etc etc... and still after trying many different medications (if not all) and all sorts of different types of counseling and treatments which include the last treatment option that is rarely use which is ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) and still, STILL wanted to commit suicide, would that be an option for a yes in this case?

 

You guys confuse Euthanasia with assisted suicide..

Euthanasia is mercy killing that is applied for sick and seriously ill persons where as what op Is saying assisting a person would attempts suicide.

I would say no, why cause rather than assisting the person to his death, why not assist him/her for what can be more beneficial to the person.

Suicide is what the person wants but why not give him what he REALLY NEEDS!

Suicide is not the way to go. Nobody should help with this unfortunate event.

 

Suicide should probably be assisted only after a doctor-approval and extensive therapy fails. Otherwise no go, try the subway.

 

Yeah, if it was an illness such as Cancer or Aids, which causes massive pain for the individual. But not becaues you're depressed or just feel like kicking the bucket.

 

i don't think suicide is ever the answer. things can always get better and life itself is a blessing. assisted suicide is as bad as murder itself IMO

 

There are a few places that do allow it, Sweden or Switzerland i think?? People go there to get killed by someone else, it's called euthanasia or some shit like that.

I think it should be legal for people who are suffering from a terminal illness, but not for stressed/depressed people.

I believe it is currently legal in Oregon and Washington. I know I read it somewhere.
