Does anyone know what government assistance I can get if I'm an Australian citizen and my parents are retired? I'm most likely going to be doing a course based around economics. I'm going to uni next year and I may as well try to exploit the government.

Well, so far as bills are concerned you can pay off your uni course through HECS debt if you don't already know. It basically means the government pays your uni fees then you pay them back through tax once you have a sustainable income.

You can also check out the Centrelink website to see if there are any available allowances or pensions you are eligible for. Seriously, in this sort of scenario, Centrelink is your best bet for getting any "free money". Apart from that, there are scholarships you can apply for, but most universities have already closed scholarship applications I think.

Otherwise, you're gonna have to get a part time job. Make sure if you do to talk to your boss once you get your timetable so you can avoid any clashes with lectures and classes.

Edit: incidentally I'm studying engineering and Japanese at the University of Queensland in 2012. Next year I'm going on exchange for a year though, hence I'm deferring. Got an OP 3 ranking, which is pretty good ^_^

Im pretty sure most citizens pay off uni fee's via HECS. A payment plan once you start working full-time after completing uni.

As for money, you can try applying for Youth Allowance.

I shall also start uni next year. fml. double degree is gonna rape me.
