vB 3.6.4?

This isn't a suggestion or complaint, merely a question as to why we're running on such an old version of vB? If someone were to say donate the amount of money required to buy a new license, would that be something Sythe would be interested in? It would also allow a much wider variety of available mods and plugins, etc. to be used.

Just a thought.

 

Sythe.Org (that is, Sythe and Matthew) have invested quite a sum into modifications and without giving out too much away, wrote custom scripts for a lot of the underside of sythe and how it runs, I'm sure I'm speaking on behalf of the admins when I say that the most worrying part of an upgrade would be because of the size of the database, such a move could cripple the site, so a lot of time and effort would be needed, since both Sythe and Matthew are in University and both lead busy lives, it could be a struggle to fit such an event in..

In a nutshell; Custom Scripts and Modifications that would be non-functioning in vB4, The possibility of crippling the database and the element of time.

 

The site just looks awfull, it's like 5 years old, pay someone to do it.

 

How does it look awful? The Newer layouts look more than good enough and vB 3.6 do what we need this forum for, posting posts and threads.

 

Matthew and Richard are both experienced enough to do it, they don't need to pay someone to do it. The reason they haven't has already been outlined.

It would be extremely time consuming, would result in a lot of time fixing, if not completely re-writing a lot of custom additions. Also, as Karl has already stated, this could also result in database corruption.

If/when the choice to update is made, it won't be an overnight process. There will be a lot of planning/preparing involved before anything is done.

 

Not to sound rude, but how many custom additions do they honestly have? The donations center is really the only thing I can see where it may have to be recoded, but even then, it shouldn't require too much work. Other than that, I see too much work as more of an excuse than a reason. I mean no disrespect, so correct me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: I also don't mean this would have to be an overnight thing. Run a 4.0 version on a testing board, and then take your time updating any custom add-ons. Once it's all set to go, simply launch the test site on this site, and you would be fine. The entire corruption thing is also somewhat of a poor reason, as it's very unlikely if you know what you're doing, and both Richard and Matthew seem competent enough to do it without any problems.

 

You see, your question just turned into a suggestion. We've given you the reasons why the VB hasn't been upgraded.

Also, if you don't like those reasons, I've got one better for you.

Richard doesn't want to do it. He owns the site. He pays for the hosting. If he doesn't want to upgrade, then it's not going to happen.

 

How many custom additions? Let me count the ones that I know about... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14... Add those to the ones that only Matthew really knows about... Oh wait. 15,16. I forgot about those two... There are a SHIT TON and some of them too Matthew a very long time to create and recoding them while he has a full life isn't easy.

The database corruption is a definite worry especially will all the custom scripts we have running. Our current skins would also need to be remade to work with 4.0. It also costs more money and Richard needs to make money off of Sythe so that is a concern for him as well.

It's been suggested before and hopefully one day it gets done but that is completely up to Richard and Matthew to decide on and do as they run all of that and know what needs to be done the most.
