    Intoxication and responsibility.

This is a topic that's been discussed a little but not as much as it should be.
What is everyone's views on intoxication and the responsibility associated with it? If someone gets drunk and kills someone, should they be held accountable? Some argue that they were not in the right state of mind and therefore had little to no control over their actions. Which brings me to my next point in question.
Do you agree with the statement "sober thoughts are drunken words"? To what extent is this statement true? Furthermore, what about "drunken actions are sober motives". Could this statement hold the same truth? There are a lot of different ideas and opinions out there and I want to have an in-depth discussion regarding this subject.

I believe in occasional drinking, a beer or two. If I'm looking to get absolutley smashed, I do it in a controlled enviorment to avoid causing bodily harm to myself or others. I'll likely elaborate on my positioning once I get home.

I moved away from binge drinking often to casual drinking myself. It got boring quick. Looking forward to the discussion.

They had control over what they drank, so they are responsible.

I agree. Do you think it's fair to decrease the penalty of the defendant?

I completely agree with you. Thats what I was thinking.
Not at all. Like the person you quoted. They drank and chose too so it is their fault. If anything it could be a worse penalty because they can't control themselves.

Of course. If someone gets drunk and does something bad, they should be held responsible. If not, someone will get drunk purposely to kill someone or something -_-...

What if the use of said substance triggers a mental illness such as schitzophrenia? In which case they are diagnosed with a mental illness?
No one has tackled this topic with a different point of view yet which is what I wanted to accomplish.

    Intoxication and responsibility.

With freedom comes opportunity, that of 'illegal' nature and 'legal' nature. Over the midst of the summer, I found myself experimenting with alcohol & pot, just enjoying myself as much as humanly possible. Once I started going out to parties, I found that the 'free' aspect of my life opened and I had the opportunity to try new things which I never really had the chance to due to the nature of the activity, i.e; drinking & smoking. I never really experimented with alcohol before, sure the pint of beer with family or sneaking that occasional gulp of Jack Daniels, it wasn't really enough to experience the effects, apart from the taste.

I started off light, one shot, two shots. A beer, hit a popper and do whatever at the party or friends house, just chill and have fun but found that overtime it wasn't enough, and started taking 4 - 6 shots, getting drunk outta' my mind and totally forgetting about what happened the night before. Waking up in the morning, I was a total wreck, absolutely hated being hung over and that was the incentive to start drinking casually. Now I'm a casual drinker, beer in hand, arm wrapped around girls shoulder; it's just the way I like it.

I also found that I was quite aggressive when I was drunk, my past likely fueling this rage and anger which caused numerous fights between friends and people that I really didn't know, but for some reason I started fighting. I totally agree that drunk actions are a sober mans motives, I don't know how many stupid things I did under the influence of alcohol which tarnished my reputation with certain people, it's unbelievable.

As I said before, I'm fine with occasionally getting smashed, as long as I'm in a controlled environment with people that I can trust to assure I don't do something stupid or understand that I'm drunk and my judgment is clouded. Getting smashed in a bar, wheeling some dudes chick and getting into a bar fight which perhaps results in a stabbing, shooting, whatever is absolutely the instigators fault. Regardless of state of mind, you chose to drink what you did, you deserve to pay the consequence, fuck manslaughter if you full out riddled someone with bullets for wheeling your chick, drunk or not, you deserve to be sentenced for murder.

Well put. I also change completely when I get drunk out of my mind. Some will argue that when you are severely intoxicated, you should not be held accountable for certain actions. In my opinion everyone should learn their limits and be held responsible for their actions.

I want to spark a different type of discussion. Something more in-depth and different. Refer to my other points on the first post or the one about the mental illness trigger.

Can getting drunk actually trigger a mental illness? Even if it could then that is getting into the insanity plea and defense which there is another thread about, but like I said in that thread. If someone is mentally ill and commits a crime, they should go somewhere that is away from society so they can have their illness handled accordingly.

This is exactly what I was going to ask: has there ever been a case where alcohol has triggered a mental illness?

It doesn't have to be alcohol, if it were to happen how would you sentence the person? He/she chose to use the drug, so wouldn't it be their responsibility?

So now a drug can trigger a mental illness? I thought you were born with one or maybe developed it throughout life, not just digest something and get one... Maybe I am wrong. It all goes back to what I said earlier. If they have a mental illness then they go to a psych facility and stay away from society. No mental illness they go to prison.

Uhm yes...? This is honestly not a discussion, people with mental problems could be a discussion which it already is, but people who are intoxicated by their own means are and should be held responsible for what they did in that state

But what if a mental illness is triggered by the drug? How would you sentence the person?

So you're saying if a mental illness is triggered by a drug, they should go to a psychiatric hospital? They chose to use the drug to trigger the illness, so wouldn't it be their fault? A lot of mental illnesses are passed down through genetics and then triggered later in life by either a tragic event or through the use of certain drugs. This is simple, entry level psychology.

I'm getting very narrow answers, although they're not wrong, they're being repeated from previous posts. When I give new ideas and questions I expect different answers..

    Intoxication and responsibility.

If one uses drugs willingly, they become responsible for any and all consequences that follow that. No rocket science there.
