Unrealistic, even if you just delve into the article a bit you would see that.

Just because a planet is in the habital zone (Thats all they know) doesn't really mean it's a place suited for us.

    Your thread title is misleading.

Yes, they're looking for planets that "might" be like earth now. Then they look for water, then life, usually. So far, nothing's made it past the "might be like earth."

His thread title is NOT misleading, actually. The scientists in the article did refer the planet as Earth 2.0.

I wouldn't say it's unrealistic, rather I would say they make too much hype over something that will let everyone down regardless. If it is habitable, we'll never reach it. If it's not, it was a false alarm.

Space is my favorite subject and I'm considering studying Aerospacial/Aeronautical engineering, but whenever it crawls into my mind I just become sad due to the fact that I'll never be able to see anything in my lifetime.

Tell me how they can call it Earth 2.0 if they don't even know the composition of the planet.

I said his title is not misleading; I agree with you that their title is misleading however. I was simply defending the OP.

If the scientists are being misleading by calling it Earth.. how is the op being any less misleading?

It seemed to me that you were unfairly accusing him of something he has no responsibility over. He wanted to show us the article, so he used the scientists' terms, it's not his fault. All I'm saying is don't shoot the messenger.

But we're delving from the subject...

I'm very interested in the studies such as these. I really hope they find out more!

It would be amazing having another planet to travel too.

Please quit the bickering about the thread title. It's fine. Any further arguing and I will start infracting. SFA is supposed to be intelligent conversation, you know what is appropriate and what is not.

You do realize you wouldn't be able to travel to it, or anyone for a long long time. I pretty much think if something is that far away it will not be reached by us.

If there is a second earth, is there a second civilization of organisms?

Fascinating but we have to keep in mind that it will be our great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grand children who will live in the generation where we travel there, etc.

The article says that Kepler 22-b is 600 light years away. Lets put this into perspective....

A shuttle traveling @ 18,000 mph would take 37,200 years to travel one light year. So lets calculate.... 37,200 x 600 = 22,320,000.

So in other words, traveling at 18,000 mph(quickest we can travel), it will take 22,320,000 years to go ONE way. You multiply this number by two if you plan on coming back lol.

Thanks, I knew a light year was a lot but that pretty much summed it up.

Even if we were able to replicate the speed of light (or neutrinos), it would still take 600 years.

God, that thought just keeps making me sad.

In response to just un dude:

Not necessarily, just because a planet can support life does not mean it has created it. We were created from quite extreme circumstances and many claim that our evolution was a miracle. It took a very specific combination of substances to create life from the primordial soup.
