    Speculating on video games

So we all know Unopened older video games go for good money

all the 1rst and second series pokemon games unopened are 100$+
    supersmash bros 64 350$

so smash bros sold 5million copies.
halo combat evolved between 5million and 10 million.

Im just wondering has anybody put out money investing in new games and storing them for a while? would this be worth it or are games so mass produced now a days that it would be hard to see a profit?

Im looking at xbox gamecube and older xbox 360 games.
anyone care to talk me out of this? lol.

It seems to me like most of the older games that are extremely expensive now are on mediums that are no longer produced (cartridges). Also, they are part of a first wave of video games, which obviously cannot happen again. Thirdly, all those games have massive followings, so you'd have to find similar ones now. Not to mention most games have been decreasing in quality and long-term appeal.

All these are reasons why you will have a difficult time making money from this. Also, don't forget that you would have to wait many, many years and still risk a loss. I'd definitely invest in something else if I were you.

Clarification: I agree that this can definitely make very solid money, but don't think that it should be a large portion of anyone's portfolio.

If you were to do this for more recent games, then I would go for buying the box sets or collector editions of games. That's the only way you would be able to possibly make money later on.

Otherwise, the old N64 games would work if they were unopened. But, you'd still have to wait a long time for them to appreciate in value.

You could go to garage sales and find N64 games for a few bucks and start building a collection that way.

I was thinking of buying all the halo and cod series unopened and storing them away for like 10-20 years.

also would gamecube games be a decent buy then? I dont think any future games are going to run off those skimpy little disk lol?

    Definitely not the first option...

Still don't think it would work.

The games just aren't really classics.

Only really old classics are worth anything really. Although you'd have more luck with unopened special editions of games rather than the standard game cases themselves.

    Sega 32x/MegaCD games.

When I say 32x/MegaCD I mean the games that require both addons.

    Nintendo 64DD games.

further more these cartridge games couldnt be "hacked" or "pirated" as easily as games now and i think that puts up the value even further than today's games.

Not the point, you are not buying the games to play them. You are buying them for the collector value and the collector buys for nostalgic value, and people will pay top dollar to relive their childhood.

If you want to try this now a days, I would go for something that is still cartridge like, the Nintendo DS/3DS, Most Atlus games have a very low print run and sell for decent prices after aging a few years, look up things like Etriam Oddyssey, and I messed up the spelling on that really bad.

DS Games aren't going to be worth anything anytime soon, so don't go with them. Get the rare SNES, NES, and N64 games while they're still $15 - $30 and hold them for a couple years somewhere safe and they should experience a nice increase. Look for the games that are considered 'Classics' and if you ever find an unopened copy that would be golden.

    Speculating on video games

Yea I live in a community where everyone moved here with kids like 10-20 years ago so there are alot of older games at garage sales pretty often.

This will always be a topic that interest me because I love video games and I love money lol.

on further inspection It really is the Nintento games that people love to collect. anything thats not nintendo just doesnt hold its value even half as well.

    Zelda, Pokemon, donkey kong etc,

Im really looking into gamecube games. they cant be emulated, there nintendo, little disk wont be easy to make fakes?, has alot of good titles, and with nintendo always having the cheapest consoles more people play them.

These are the games I really wanta buy as soon as I can unopened.
    Super smash bros Melee *
    super mario sunshine*
    fire emblem path of radiance*
    pokemon colloseum*
    pokemon xd gale of darkness*
    Pikmin*
    Metroid prime*
    ocarina of time w/masterquest*
    legend of zelda collectors edition*

these are games I would also buy but arent priority
    Metroid prime 2
    super mario striker
    shadow the hedgehog
    legend of zelda windwaker
    zelda twighlight princess
    zelda four swords
    starfox adventure
    starfox assault
    pikmin2
    gauntlet dark legacy

    also thinking of buying
tony hawk games? skatings pretty huge right now and these are going to be the games that all the mid aged skaters have played
all starwars games? I mean shit anything starwars unopened increases in value right?

I choose games like zelda games, mario games and pokemon games becasue they have Huge followings.

Pikmin and metroid where both highlight games when gamecube first came out and almost all gc owners played them.

Idk if anyone played the gauntlet games but they where amazing In my opinion.

Fire emblem has a HUUUUUGE following. probly not in numbers but anyone who has played any fire emblem game though wants to own them all lol

also thinking about sets of games but not sure these are the lowest on my list.
    resident evil 1-4
donkey congo + rythem beat 1-2 (never played them and sounds kinda gay but It looks cool as fuck)

No i dont think it would be a good idea to store some games up for a while as games now adays can be mass produced and easily pirated basically meaning if you dont know companies make them at a few cents per disk and make a few thousand a hour.If you want to invest then i would find a alternative item such as stamps or businesses.Coins are also meant to be a good one.

Video games have great investment value.

If you find it you should pick up the collectors edition copy of Oblivion that had the T rating before it was changed to an M. You should try to get it unopened, and pick up any games with major mistakes on the cover.

But if you want a quick investment I still say pick up the rare SNES and NES games that are cheap and hold them for a little bit, because it is going to take a long time for disc games to appreciate in value the way cartridge games have. I mean look it took 15 - 20 years for them to get from their original value to todays value.
