The majority of the people on the internet are dishonest anyway.

Sounds like the three of you need to go outside or something. Luring people into trying to get free RSGP is just as bad as scamming in my opinion. Congrats on having the majority of sythe on your dicks after this, but I'm not impressed. Surely, you guys have better things to do with your time than stage scam attempts... and for the handful of people you're going to ban- they probably would have been reported by other's or have not had the opportunity to try and scam had you not staged this whole thing in the first place.

I don't think the ends justified the means. Staff integrity is paramount.

This was done for the good of the community. Ever heard of a sting? Incidentally, 24 people is not a "handful" compared to the amount of people who are normally banned for scamming every day.

 

Pffft, why are people still arguing over this? What was done was very impressive and well thought out to catch some dishonest and potential scammers, well done to the mods who thought of this. If anyone doesn't like what the mods did then just leave the site seriously, time wasters.

So if normal members were to do this there would be no repercussion for us? Of course not, we would probably be temp banned (at least) and there would be a serious discussion about it. Though staff can do it? Does that mean that staff is above the rules?

 

Not going to lie, they probably think they are, or at least above the rest of us. For whatever reason.

 

Staff didn't profit from this, and there were a few people that knew it, including Admins. Had users done it, they would have needed to get an okay from Admins, which would not have been very likely.

 

Kind of a sneaky operation you did there, what was the motivation behind this? I see a few names up there that are good members of this community, is this really necessary?

 

Obviously they weren't "good" members if they're up there.

 

Entrapment is an illegally defined word for a reason. This is a sham and i'm embarrassed for the staff responsible for this operation. The intent was good but this just isn't something I'd expect from Sythe.

 

For the last time there was no entrapment.

I really feel Viou has covered all the relevant points here, it's disappointing to see the leaders of this website pull such a ploy and hopefully nothing this deceitful happens again.

I'm quite glad to see Nick's comment on the staff rethinking this type of dishonesty.

In the long run, you made a number of well respected users lose a bit of faith in the staff - I'm pretty sure that is the only community-shaping that happened here. Even the people who commend this - they're still aware that the staff is capable of acting in such a deceitful way, this after all is the downfall of most forums.

Hopefully Sythe himself comments on this.

 

It amazes me how people can be upset when people with malicious intent are banned. Especially considering that most of the people posting with discontent are the market users who would most likely effected by these people.

Would you rather n4n0 and govind not have done this, and then see the people on that list scam? What has that accomplished? Nothing, except for a scam.

I guess I am having trouble seeing the point in arguing this.

 

Thank you all for your feedback. Sythe himself investigated the situation and found no wrong doing. Following his logic, we're going to keep the bans in place. However, in the future, any type of "sting" will be better planned and operated. There's little point in keeping this open or discussing the issue I'm afraid. Thanks again.
