Ayurveda -- Enriched by the past

Traditional ayurvedic treatments are based on the knowledge that had been passed on, through many generations since ancient times. The first reference to Ayurveda can be seen in Vedas and it is believed that ancient sages and scholars contributed to this medical system enormously. Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, written about 2000 years back are considered to be two main books on the topic and they are written by two ancient scholars known as Charaka and Sushruta. Ashtangahridaya too is another important text on Ayurveda.

These ancient texts provide details on the eight branches of Ayurveda. The first branch is general medicine which is known as kaya chikitsa in Ayurveda. ENT, surgery, pediatrics, toxicology, psychiatry, etc are some other branches of Ayurveda. It also has branches dealing with the care of the elderly and rejuvenation and with the science of aphrodisiac

``Ayurveda is as scientific and systematic as the mainstream medical system like allopathy. It is divided into branches and sub-branches and there are specialists researching on each particular branch,’’ says Saneesh M N, an ayurvedic practitioner. Ayurveda, with a history of curing diseases for the last 5000 years is a very reliable medical system and its methods have been proven effective since ages. It is constantly evolving and researching on the recent happenings in the healthcare sector. Meanwhile, allopathy can boast of only a few hundred years of history and it is yet to prove whether it will survive thousands of years.

This is interesting. Society these days is so dependent on modern medicine and pharmaceutical drugs. I am very guilty of this myself too. I have always wanted to gravitate towards more natural and traditional medicines, as they seem much, much healthier for you.

Although most medicines and drugs these days can do wonders for certain illnesses, diseases, and even minor temporary problems, they are still just chemicals being pumped into your body and so its not really a surprise why humans seem to have all these diseases in the first place. Cancer, for instance, seems to be more common than ever these days. I would not be surprised if its heavily linked to all the crap we constantly rely on and pump into our bodies.
