In Morrowind you just clicked at the box and one of the following happened:
1) skill level not enough -> stop
2) failure -> try again
3) out of lockpicks -> stop
4) success -> steal everything inside


in Oblivion, you spammed the auto-attempt until:
1) out of lockpicks
2) success
However, getting the skeleton key (which never breaks) was piss easy and then you just spamclicked auto-attempt until you're done.

I'm saying that it's infinitely harder in Skyrim, but that's because in the previous two TES games there was literally no challenge.

 

In Skyrim, you obtain The Tower as your astrological sign and do the following:
1) use The Tower Perk (on ANY level of lock, from novice to master, regardless of your lockpicking level)
2) wait 1 minute max for 24 hours to pass while "waiting/resting"
3) use the perk again on another object

If you're not cheap and you don't use auto-attempt or magic/perks to unlock locks, and you only look at the manual process, oblivion was much more difficult than skyrim. And much more realistic. With real life lockpicking, you trip tumblers, not find a magic angle that opens the lock

 

too bad too, it took me ages to master oblivion's tumbler system. ofc I don't hate on the new method, the tumbler shit can be so fucking frustrating sometimes. had plenty of practice too with FO3 and FONV

 

TBH I'm thinking I'll enjoy skyward sword mire than skyrim (Yes... I have a Wii...)

Fun fact: through my dozens of hours of gameplay and at level 48, I have somehow skillfully managed to dodge every single of these stones. I didn't even know they existed, my brother told me about them a few days ago. I was wondering what the stones in the loading screens were, guess this explains it. Apparently the first stone was along the road to the first town you're supposed to go, but I was distracted by a fox and started chasing after it instead of following the road.
