A lot of the movies I thought of have already been suggested, but here's a couple more

While a documentary, I found it hugely interesting to watch - "Restrepo".
It follows a Platoon of the US Military in one of the most dangerous Valleys in Afghanistan for a year. It's received great ratings and reviews, as well as winning an Emmy and being nominated for countless other awards like an Oscar.

"Hanna" was another pretty good movie, and has some pretty wicked action scenes -


"The Town" is the final movie that I can think of that I have watched recently. It somewhat reminded me of the Bourne series, but much more toned down and less "conspiracy" orientated.

Both Hanna and The Town were very original post-2000 action/crime flicks. Ben Affleck has really showcased his talent for the better as director/screenwriter and Joe Wright, director of Hanna has also made quite the mark these past few years.

Check out Wright's prior film, 'Atonement' . Absolutely heartbreaking and masterfully directed. The sustained beach sequence is of the best scenes filmed among the past decade.

Oldboy was mentioned earlier in this thread, i highly recommend this one. Probably the definitive revenge film of our time.

Kick-Ass, and In Bruges are two 'crime' films that come to mind, both of which exceptionally original and witty. These are two that come to mind that particularly fit the criterion that you've established for us.

I highly suggest NOT watching this movie.

A couple guys I work with have seen it and they say it is HORRID. Damn near traumatizing. There's some SICK shit in this movie.

 

Conan the barbarian was actually pretty good.
