I'm sorry if my question isn't gfx - I'm technologically challenged.
Whenever I crop a photo, the background becomes white. I'm trying to get a transparent background. I'm using paint, does anyone know what I should do?

Well first, paint sucks (no offence). You would be way better off with photoshop. If you can't buy photoshop, you could use an alternative program called gimp, which is free (Click Here).

    Back on topic~~~
Well you could try selecting the part you want, copying it (Ctr + C), closing the document, opening a new one, and pasting it. Be sure to save it as a .png or it won't remain transparent.
Paint isn't capable of doing much, but I hope this helped :).
