Seniority

Seniority is a standard in our society that says we should treat people who are older with more respect, just because they are older.

Just wondering what you think about seniority.


I personally think its complete bullshit. Nobody should be respected if they haven't earned it. I mean, I'm not going to respect a 30 year more than a friend who is my age JUST because he is older.

I know some of you might say "well you're going to believe in it when you're older" and you're probably right. The thing is, we're taught all our lives that we should treat older people with more respect, and when you reach that age it's just something that you expect to happen.

So, post your thoughts.

 

In regards to age I completely agree with you.

However, in the workplace I think some seniority based on how long you've worked there and how useful you are is beneficial and justified. Just pointing that out because the jobs I've worked recently haven't given any importance to that.

 

Agree with you Shakaka, I guess we'll know what they mean when we reach our early thirtys and have a 15 year old kid pissing us off

 

I think the only older people you should respect more is you're grandparents. But the other older people, nah. Mainly because some are little dicks. And they want us to respect them? I don't think that would work out.

 

Seniority is a foolish concept, I don't respect half the people older than me.

 

So you guys mean that when you're 30, you'd enjoy having 15 year olds treat you as if you were crap?

 

They lived twice as long as you I don't even think they care what a teenager thinks about seniority. The facts are its just respect to respect them. and say at work its a must to respect them as they know so much more about what your job is about and they can help you. Same thing on here, some mods have been here longer. Most people do in fact respect the mods because of their knowledge and their time being here.

 

I judge people based on their actions. I do not presume that somebody older than me is deserving of my respect.

 

i agree with shredderbeam although most people who are older are smarter because have gone through life longer and have learned more

 

I respect someone who is older than me just because they are older, and "know more than we do". Now if they are a complete moron then there really is no need.

Plus seniority is great. I can cut underclassmen in lunch lines at school!!!

 

No, not at all. I'm saying that a 15 year old shouldn't allow the 30 year old to treat them like crap simply because they are 15.

I agree with what you're saying but it's mainly meant that they have been around longer therefor they know more and usually know whats right but obviously not in every situation. but I believe you should respect everyone until you are given a reason not to.

 

Exactly, I'm not saying you should go around being blatantly rude to every person you meet, but you don't have to treat anyone better than someone else if you don't have a reason.

 

I agree and I believe that when I get older I will not respect someone even if they think they can demand it.. and I have even done that to my boss before he tried to demand respect from me and I told him straight up that he will not demand respect from me. He can earn it.. he promoted me.. but anyways I believe that it is bull... yah... lolz
