Quick summoning question

I have a 1 defence pure, and am obviously terrified of accidently training defence.
I am close to 52 summoning, and am wondering if I use a spirit terrorbird (controlled xp) in the wilderness is it likely that I will train defence?

I am unclear as to how exactly famaliars work in wildy - do i have to click attack for it to attack an enemy, or will it attack automatically in multi-combat.
Also, will it attack back if someone attacks my familiar?

They will all auto attack in multi apart from a Yak I believe

 

This is correct, also why you don't see many pures (only main pkers) with birds in the wild.

Summoning is always handy. Keep picking up charms, but you don't necessarily have to train summoning just yet. Down the line you might decide to turn it into a main, or Jagex might eliminate pures in the combat rework

 

Most likely will be eliminated.

Theres other ways to train summoning then casting familiars. As he said, keep picking up charms. You can make pouches and get summoning that way.
