    Question for Atheists

An Atheist asserts that a personal God does not exist.

Where, then, does morality come from? Without a God, what is the basis of morality?

    Question for Atheists

Most come from society. Your circumstances play a major role in developing morals. A person who grows up in the USA for instance, would most likely think that murdering is wrong correct? But a person who grows up in a war-like tribe in Africa and sees unprovoked murder all around him every day would probably not think anything of it. It can also come from your own personality though. A person who is lazy and doesn't want to get a job might resort to stealing to pay his bills, and might not think anything of it depending on his personality. If a God instilled our morals in us, why does everyone differ in what they believe to be right and wrong?

Can you actually tell me you believe some of the things in the Bible? Many things defy logic. I also think the bible is worded to cover up loose ends, & make excuses etc.

I think Dpunk put it quite well. I'd have to agree with his answer on the subject.

    Question for Atheists

Morality comes from your surrounding environment; the every day happenings, things you hear on the news, your parents, friends, siblings.

Morality is your interpretation of life and how it should be lived.

    Question for Atheists

It comes from common sense, family, and community. Morals don't need to stem from religion..

Lets look at the principal meaning.. "code of conduct held to be authoritative in matters of right and wrong, whether by society, philosophy, religion, or individual conscience."

Basically is it right to do this or is it wrong. Ethics. Right or Wrong

Mores which are essentially the unwritten rules of society come from the established practices already in existence.

    Question for Atheists

Dpunk and Immortality put it quite well.

Besides, who is the Judeo-Christian God to talk about morals? In the OT, he promotes selling your daughters as a sex-slave (Exodus 21:1-11), child abuse (Judges 11:29-40 and Isaiah 13:16), and bashing babies against rocks (Hosea 13:16 & Psalms 137:9).

    What a sick fuck.

    Question for Atheists

If morality stems from such things as upbringing, then it is impermanent, and subjective, correct? It means that there is no higher set of absolute moral laws, and that certain actions may be viewed as right or wrong by certain individuals, but are in effect neither.

So basically, right and wrong are human constructs, and are meaningless. If I murder another person, there is no higher law that makes it wrong.

And yes, Awakens Ghost, as America said, I am an Atheist. (Actually, I am more of an Agnostic from a logical point of view, but personally I am an Atheist.)

    Question for Atheists

Yes, you would be correct. In my opinion, humans are just egotistical to think that we have some higher power that judges our actions. What would make any of our meager actions enough of a spectacle to a higher being that it would only choose to set standards for ours, and not that of animals and such. Humans also tend to need a set of rules to abide by in order for peace to be kept. Religion does it perfectly by bringing all it's followers together under one moral code. It creates a sense of unity and thus makes it easier for the government to rule.

    Question for Atheists

Morality, good, evil, it's all just a matter of perspective. Punching a baby might seem evil but eating them makes it pale in comparison. I think that good and evil are just something humans created much like determining whether or not someone is beautiful or not. How do you quantify something like that? You can make basic guidelines but no concrete rules.

Yeah Even the bible tells people to use your morals to guide you and treat everyone you know as your brother and sister and follow the laws of the land. SO it has to do with your upbringings as well I believe.

    Question for Atheists

R S G O D, are you talking about morals? or the world?

As for the question, rather simply explained, morals are nothing to do with whether or not God exists, but have to do with our upbringing, what we are used to, what we think is the right thing to do.

    Question for Atheists

Why waste time/life avoiding things that are so called "bad" when they are more enjoyable? Why devote your life to something you don't know exists? Why would we waste having fun for something that seems so trivial and will most likely not even be true.

Just because we don't have a full explanation for something doesn't mean we should cop out and say God did it. Science is about finding the truth, not just settling for something that sounds good and makes you feel better about yourself.
