Odd Future SUCKS (mostly)

This thread has been building up in me for awhile. I don't like OF. OF music is overhyped, its become just about the mentality. Its fucking horrorcore and the lyrics suck. The kids IRL are fucking pussies, earl is chilling out at some samoan 50k a year resort school. OF is a novelty.



Is this a joke? Is this a prank? All they do is hate on good hip hop, and pick fights. OF has gotten really childish, its not about the music anymore, its about the image.


OF fans are also ridiculously moronic, comprised mostly of annoying skater white kids with illusions of grandeur/african descent.

Agreed. They are extremely overrated. I haven't heard a song of theirs that I've even liked.

 

I also agree that they're overrated. Their image stands out because it's so bold right now, but eventually they're gona have to change their image a little to fit in with the industry. I heard a r&bish track the other day featuring Tyler the Creator and was like WTF.

How does this even make sense? Most of the people I know who listen to Odd Future are neither skaters or "morons". I know that this is your opinion, but you have no proof to justify any of the statements that you have just said.

Also, Earl is not going to a "resort" school. He's currently in a school that helps with
Low self-esteem
Anger
Difficulty making or keeping friends
Refusal to take responsibility for his actions
Depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder
Oppositional behavior, defiance or conduct disorder
ADD/ADHD
etc.

He was put there because his mom wanted to give him a positive direction in his life. The common "mentality" of the music does not drive me to be addicted to listen to them. I started listening to OF in August of 2010. I do enjoy their music because they bring something new to the table, some originality, which is what the Hip Hop/Rap music scene is lacking now a days. I also don't understand how you came to the point that their lyrics suck. Explain more?

Also, how would you know that OF fans are "pussies". Sure there are many band wagoners that think it's "cool" to listen to OF, but that doesn't mean that all fans are "pussies". You're also implying that OF has some "image" that they'd like to send the world. What image?

And no, i'm not a butthurt OF fanboy who dick rides them. I'm just a 16 year old guy enjoying music that I think this is original.

 

I don't like Odd Future myself, except for Earl though. He's got flow.

 

I don't get where you get off calling them pussies, the whole way it's been them making music because they like doing it. Part of their record contract was that they have full control over music produced. Earl is actually at Coral Reef Academy, a place like Tera Melos said is where 'troubled youths' get sent by their parents to get corrected. He hates it. People who yell "OF sucks" clearly don't understand the music. It's also worth nothing that yes, there are a lot of dick riders but this was when Yonkers came out (so many "fans" only know this song), again these fans were dwarfed by the next wave that came after Tyler's VMA.


Yes, Tyler has a few horrorcore and emotional raps, but you have to judge him (and the group) as a whole. Some of the horrorcore shit you hear is through his alter-ego or characters he has created. You sound like a dick when you say the "lyrics suck", I have spent a long time analyzing their lyrics, believe me when I say they are not uneducated. An example, from 15 year old Earl Sweatshirt:

“in my back pocket, take jade on vacation

the hotel switch from heartbreak to bates quick,

rippin out braids with bare hands amazes

the crowd, go crazy, hands raised, im laced with

swag by the eigth in case you wanna taste it.”​

Let me explain.

Heartbreak Hotel = An Elvis song about romance
Bates = The Hotel in an Alfred Hitchcock movie 'Psycho' about murder

Result: He starts romancing a girl in a hotel room, and all of a sudden goes into a violent and Psycho state. Classic teenage romance.

Now how many 15 year old rappers, let alone rappers can rap like that? I can find many examples from a teenage Tyler's lyrics, too, that not any common rapper will rap about.


The general attitude is the "dont give a fuck" mentality, which is what Tyler and Earl bring. They hate a lot on mainstream, but so what, it's all warranted with the shit that is produced. There are others in OF who are all about completely different themes and can accommodate to any mood;
- Mike G is a lot more optimistic and smooth
- Frank Ocean... well he's just a dope R&B singer who is generally about love and romance
- MellowHype, these guys are just potheads with a slightly dark theme



I could honestly go on, but all up, there is nothing new about your rants. But the conclusion jumping and misunderstanding is getting a little old. Tell Tyler on his formspring and he will tell you "that's awesome as fuck, why are you telling me this". They make music because they enjoy doing it, not to please everyone (fuck mainstream). I listen to them because they are a young, vibrant, intelligent, diverse group who bring something to the table that hip-hop and rap is missing.

My issue is that the music is almost unlistenable (save a few poppy songs), and that people don't really listen to OF, they just blast yonkers, and rep OF everywhere they go.

 

Funniest part is, I never said anything that claimed you were on their dicks for criticizing them.

I always laugh when people are like "FREE EARL, FREE EARL" like he's in prison for something he didn't do. He's at a "troubled youth" in Samoa because his mom thought he was troubled. People don't just send their children to "troubled youth" places in a different country for nothing.

This is the part where I go out of my way to point out that alter-egos have never been an excuse for the lyrics one writes. I didn't like Eminem (still don't) for the fact that when people cornered him on his lyrics, he went out of his way to say he was "expressing himself through an alter ego". Which I can understand if you're telling a story through your words, but most of the shit is just straight up garbage and all talk. Hype to make themselves sound all out there, when I know for a fact that a bunch of preppy white kids and hipsters are/were the key component to Odd Future. Period.

I'm sorry, but I'm one of those people who says that a lot of the time, music doesn't take as much skill as you think it does. I agree, that lyric is great, there's no denying that the reference was very clever. But does one, two, ten, references outside your music make it great? Do metaphors really make the song?

Now you say why other rappers don't rap like that. Well you see, pop music and trash that comes out of the mainstream music industry, is absolute garbage. Not only are they reigned in, but their music is strictly for pop music purposes. If it sounds catchy on a beat, and it can be turned into soundbites on a phone, then they can make a shit ton off of it.

I've talked to people who say they're so good because of the difference in their music and all of that shit, but that's the deal with a GROUP. You can't just let one of your members get shot down for being a pile of shit by saying "you gotta judge us all, that's the only way it works out". If one of Odd Future is garbage, one of Odd Future is garbage. If you want to say a "one is a part of the whole", then Odd Future is garbage because the "don't give a fuck mentality" is stupid.

"Tell Tyler on his formspring" is where I just started laughing. Formspring? Fuck formspring. All questions/responses from that website are so fucking fake that if I could, I'd wipe the website out. It's an ego-stroking contest. I'd love to go tell him that his music isn't original (he may have wolves, but ya know, ICP has clowns ) , or that he's not really "x" or "y". But I don't have much to say other than my personal vote to ignore it and move on. Hence why I've made a personal choice not to listen to it and give it more publicity. Which is something most people should do if I'm not mistaken.

HOWEVER, just for the comment alone from you, JohnK, where you say "We just don't get it". That's just laughable, plain and simple. I get it, he's trying to straggle for attention. He has issues that he expresses through his music and tries to put on "alter-egos" as a way of hiding it. He has a group of people that all do their own thing, like most groups do.

It's almost, ALMOST like people who say that Soulja Boy is talented because he's satirical. Almost. Because I can personally say that people who believe that Soulja Boy is satirical, are autistic.

Also, I've pretty much summed some of the songs from Odd Future into one step up than this.

 

Odd Future is okay, I haven't really listened to them that much. I've only heard some of Tyler's album, but I really like the song Yonkers.

 

I support "FREE EARL" because of his eloquent rap style, and i'd like him to return and make more music. Saying "FREE (insert person)" just means you wish for them to return to their previous self. If OF changed to slow jam R&B songs that don't cuss or do their previous shit, I can wear a "FREE OF" shirt to show my support for their change back to their original state. Being in jail is also not being in thier original state.

Pay less attention to what they say and more attention to how they say it.

If you don't think it takes much skill, please go to this thread and make a rap. Try to make it good, i'll tell you if you've succeeded or not.
