New operating system questions

ok so I recently upgraded from windows 7 home and office to windows 7 ultimate and my computer turns on and off really slowly. I've tried defraging and cleaning the disc but there's no problems and i have spyware doctor so no viruses. I want to change the operating system so that it'll run smoother. I'm looking at getting windows 7 eternity, extreme, or just using my installation disc to get back to home and office. which would you recommend and how should I go about backing up the hard drive and installing the new operating system?

 

well i doubt you have any actual use for windows 7 ultimate so just go back to windows 7 home premium where you had no problems...

 

yea that's what I'm planning on doing, but how do I backup my hard drive and transfer files. I don't have an external hard drive but I have an old desktop computer and a 4gb flash drive. Is there an easier way to transfer stuff?

 

Could it be that you've got a tone of stuff on your computer which slows it down?

 

Maybe instead of downgrading you could try this guide i found.

It isn't my guide, but it allows you to change what programs load when starting up your computer. Allowing it to boot up faster.

You could take out the hard drive from your other desktop computer, put all the files from the computer you're upgrading onto the hard drive of the other computer but in a folder so it doesn't get mixed up... Then yea transfer them back..
Or you could go back and forth with a flash drive all day.
Or if you don't have to many files you can upload them to something like windows skydrive and put them back on when you fix everything..

Also, since you're in a position to change your OS, might I suggest a dual boot with some version of linux that you like? Always fun to mess around with that

OP: did you look at the list of programs that ******** on boot? Windows vista-7 is 1 behomoth monster of a system, and is heavy on resources. What's your hardware profile look like?

 

There was an update to Windows 7, I'm not sure which one, I think service pack 1, which almost doubled boot speeds.

Go to your Windows installed updates, look for Service Pack 1 (or SP1) and then uninstall it.

It should go back to your previous, faster boot speed.

 

^ But then arbitrary code can be run in *.wmf images, it's like a drive by on steroids.
