    Misunderstanding me.

I guess I should start at the very beginning. My mother and father just have a problem understanding me. They complain all day about how the fact that I study too little, although I put in a good 3 hours every day.

Besides that, they also complain about my average grades and the fact that I'm very anti-social. I just don't get it. Everything I do or have ever done has never been good enough for them.

They're always bitching at me to be more like my brother, who's in medical school. They apparently want me to follow in his footsteps. I've only told them about a billion times that I'm not interested, but they're persistent.

I don't really like studying, but I do it for them. I don't really want to be in pure science stream, but they forced me into taking it. I feel like my life revolves around them. Am I not supposed to live my life according to the way I want to?

They also are prejudiced against homosexuals. I've had to listen to lectures about the evils of homosexuality. One of the many reasons I'm reluctant to tell them I'm bisexual, as they told me they'd disown any child of theirs who was homosexual.

My schoolmates behaviour are another matter. They're kind of racist cause I'm one of the only non-chinese studens in our school. I normally would punch them, but as a prefect, I'm not allowed to do that or I'd be caned publicly, which is not very appealing to me.

My friends also seem to misunderstand most of what I'm trying to say. My english is not bad, but their english is quite poor and they usually insult me for using complex words. They usually call me a stuck-up bastard, which is getting really irritating. (No disrespect meant to chinese people on this forum).

What do I do? All advice is welcome.

    Sorry for the long post.

for starters, Well done with Prefect, doesn't it tell you something?

You are prefect and not them, because you CAN be.

I think you are strong enough to take care of these issues yourself, as for following in your brothers footsteps, I think you should find out what you want to do as a Career, and try speak to your parents about it.

It is YOUR life, not your Parents, although they only want the best for you, they must understand that it's going to be YOUR future, and YOUR Career, not theirs.

It used to tell me that I was better than them. But that's before they started calling me the discipline teacher's dog. I was quite hurt when they all started calling me that, though I've learnt to ignore it now.

I really want to be a lawyer, but my parents are hearing none of it. They want me to do a science course. I've tried talking to them about it, but the response is always the same. "But son, you must follow in your brother's footsteps". It drives me mad.

To the first poster, your post did not help me at all. Sorry :(

You're already in the pure science stream now, the time for making a stand about that was *before* you started it, not now. I suggest you concentrate on doing well in science, even if you hate it.

Just because you are studying science at school doesn't mean you have to go to medical school if you decide you really don't want to. Good grades in science subjects can be an entry into many different careers, a lot not even related to science.

The things your schoolmates say to you might seem really important to you now, but they really don't matter. You won't stay in contact with them after school finishes.

Apart from that, you should think carefully to yourself about what your parents are saying. In the end, parents care deeply for their children and want the best for them. Is there really no truth to what they are saying about studying too little? Have you tried to be more sociable? If they see you making an genuine effort to follow their recommendations, they might be more understanding.

For myself, I am quite glad that my parents push me quite hard, the extra bit of effort you put in when you are young will give you better rewards when you are older.

Is there any way you can support yourself if say you were to live on your own? In my opinion I'd put it out on the table of what I'd want to do and if they don't like it well that just depends how far they would go... as in would they kick you out? I mean being a lawyer is a great career I would be amazed and supportive if my child wanted to become one.
Sure parents want whats best for their child, but if they really care whats best for you they would support your career choice.

Now if you wanted to join the circus then i'd understand them hearing none of it.

That was one of the best pieces of advice, mortt, thank you.

Eliza, I'm 15. You can't work in my country if you're under 18. I'll talk to my parents again and see what they say.

    Thanks everyone.

I could talk to your parents for you, seriously. You don't deserve the treatment.

    What grades do you get?

It sounds to me that your parents are narrow minded control freaks, they want you to do what they want you to do, ignoring your ambitions. Personally tell them this. Also don't you find yourself feeling inferior to your brother as they are consistantly mentioning that you should be more like him? I'd be pretty annoyed by this. As for your sexuality. Presuming your young. Tell them this after you have moved out of their house. If they don't talk to you over a stupid thing like this then I would be ashamed to have parents like that, and wouldn't talk to them either.

I'd appreciate it, but that would just raise unwanted questions and they'd find out about Sythe.

Thanks Rhodes. I'll do that :) They ARE control freaks, but they're still my parents.

Your parents cannot push you into a certain career field if you don't have the desire to go for the gold there either.

I would NEVER ever consider being a homosexual but last time I checked those people have feelings too. I don't care as long as they don't try to come on to me with it. Maybe your parents forget those people have feelings too just like the rest of us.

As far as your other issues I haven't been there, but I can say just do what you WANT to do and what is right for you.

Yeah that's all great and stuff, but I'm not a really smart student. Therefore, I cannot get a scholarship. Furthermore, they are paying for my college fees. So I can't do law if they won't pay for it. =/

Yeah we do have feelings. I'm not homosexual, but bisexual though :)

Looks like you and I are pretty much on the same boat, although some part of my life is different from yours. I'm planning on running away from my house soon (I'm still planning on how to do it). Note that I'm not joking.

If you want, you can run away and be independent, although there is no guarantee that you will succeed. If not, you will have to mind them. That's all that you can really do.

Running away. Run where? I'll only be wanted, get caught, sent back home and get punished for running away.

So I'm pretty much at a dead end.

I know, that's the hard part. Well, have a little talk with your parents and tell them what you really think. Let's see how they respond.

They're pushing you to be better. Even if you're doing good enough (for yourself, anyways), it's always good to get pushed that little bit more. You'll thank them in the long run, believe me.

typical parents influenced by your brother's success, one thing you should try and do is study your ass off for a really good report(if you can), and this will usually calm them down, the whole reason is that your parent's think you have a very average report and that you can do much better like your brother, so that if they put you into your brothers footsteps you will ultimately do better in school( just my theory), anyways try and top your report, and then tell em that i'm only doing this well because i want to do my own thing or etc
